Making Burgers Safe

first_img“The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends cooking ground beef to 160 degrees,” hesaid. “That allows for a margin of safety.” “It’s easy to eliminate the risk of contaminated hamburgers,” said Mike Doyle, director of theUniversity of Georgia Center for Food Safety and Quality Enhancement. “Just make sureyou cook them properly.” “I continue to tell people to cook a hamburger until it’s no longer red inside and the juices rungray or are no longer pink,” he said. “But there is evidence that color isn’t always reliable.” Checking hamburger patties with most meat thermometers is hard, if not impossible. “Thereare some new ones that cost about $10,” he said. “They’re thinner and can be inserted into apatty easier than standard meat thermometers.” Young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems are the mostsusceptible to foodborne illness. UGA studies have shown that heating ground beef to 155 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 secondswill kill E. coli bacteria, Doyle said. While scientists work on ways to stop E. coli 0157:H7 contamination of food products, it’seasy to protect yourself. The latest USDA recommendations call for using a meat thermometer to check the internaltemperature. And Doyle concurs that it’s the only perfectly safe way to check. E. coli 0157:H7 causes severe stomach cramps and diarrhea which oftens turns bloody aftertwo or three days. The symptoms usually go away by themselves after six to eight days. But Doyle said just getting a 160-degree reading isn’t a perfect indicator. “There can be a10-degree variation from one spot to another in some hamburgers,” he said. “The coldest spotisn’t always the center.” In a small number of people, most often children, the E. coli strain can cause a rare butserious problem called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can lead to kidney failure anddeath.last_img read more

Rizzo said people from other teams in baseball reached out to the Nationals to offer advice before they faced the Astros in the Fall Classic. Rescued lions find home in South Africa

first_img3 May 2016Iron, Zeus, and Rapunzel are part of the group of rescued lions that arrived in South Africa on 1 May. They are three of the 33 big cats saved by Animal Defenders International (ADI) from circuses in Peru and Columbia and rehomed at the Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary in Limpopo.Iron’s release into the enclosure is the fairy-tale ending for 33 mistreated circus lions.“Iron is one of the Colombian 9, the first animals to be handed over after the country’s wild animal circus ban was passed,” wrote ADI on its Facebook page. “With his cage mate Ojiclaro, Iron was a pitiful sight, the years of suffering clearly visible on his face.”Iron is the first to be released! The cost per cat per transfer was $10 000 (approximately R142 000).Care neededThe animals are no longer able to function in the wild, and will need to be taken care of.“Almost all of the rescued lions have been mutilated to remove their claws, one has lost an eye, another is almost blind, and many have smashed and broken teeth so would not survive in the wild,” ADI said in a statement.Their new South African home is a large natural enclosures containing drinking pools, platforms and toys.“The lion habitats will be steadily expanded over the coming months as the lions become familiar with their new life and are introduced to each other.”ADI president, Jan Creamer, said this is the first time the animals are in their natural habitat. “It’s the best environment for them. They have been beaten, they have been starved, and they have been deprived of everything that makes life worth living for a lion. We have brought them back to paradise, where they belong.” South Africa.info reporterlast_img read more

Read a Book Today

first_imgTebogo Ditshego, CEO of Ditshego Media and founder of the South African Reading Foundation, talking to students about success and the importance of readingAccording to a survey conducted by Stats SA in 2011, 7.1% of South Africa’s population could read and write, but this figure was based on the ability to read and write short sentences and fill in forms. This means that at the time of the survey, 2.643 million South African adults experienced difficulty reading, or could not read at all.Actress Nomzamo Mbatha talking to Wits students about the power of words (images: Bhekumuzi Mdakane)Understanding that reading and literacy can open doors to opportunity, Tebogo Ditshego, chief executive at Ditshego Media, started the South African Reading Foundation in early 2012 to address South Africa’s literacy problem.“We can become as great as we want to be, but it all starts with a book,” said Ditshego, speaking at the World Book Day Read a Book SA event at the University of the Witwatersrand on 23 April.Since 1997 World Book Day has celebrated authors, illustrators, and books, and more importantly, reading and its importance in education and literacy.Organised by the South African Reading Foundation through its Read a Book SA campaign, and in conjunction with Brand South Africa and Play Your Part, the event attracted local personalities to share their love of reading, and inspire a love of reading in others.Actors Nomzamo Mbatha and Masego “Maps” Maponyane; media personality, Pearl Modiadie; social entrepreneur and One Young World ambassador, Luvuyo Mandela; National Youth Development Agency executive chairperson, Yershen Pillay; and writer and entrepreneur, Kojo Baffoe all contributed their stories on how reading helped mould their intellects, and how important reading is to fulfilling South Africa’s potential.WHY READING IS IMPORTANT“Reading and literacy are critically important because they add value and credence to a knowledge economy,” says Brand South Africa’s director of strategic marketing, Wendy Tlou.Writer and entrepreneur Kojo Baffoe reads an extract from Paul Beatty’s novel “The White Boy Shuffle”“A reading nation is a nation that is informed; it is a nation that is curious; it is a nation that is opinionated; but it is also a nation that does, and moves away from just thinking but actually doing.“Through this event we aim to help more South Africans discover the joys of reading and further highlight the importance of reading”, she said, adding, “For me reading has been, and still is, the only journey I take when I want to transport myself to a different world.”At the event she concluded by urging students to “Welcome reading, use reading as a source of strength and a source of confidence, use written words to form and create your opinions because your opinion matters,” adding that “Our struggle is no longer one of political freedom; it’s a struggle for intellectual freedom.”To learn more about World Book Day and the Read a Book SA campaign, follow the South African Reading Foundation @ReadabookSA on twitter.last_img read more

BidModo Takes the Pain Out of B2B Classifieds

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting If you’ve ever used Craigslist before (and who hasn’t?) then you know it can be amazingly useful for some things and a terrible waste of time for others. If you’re a small business looking for an accountant or the best and cheapest way to outsource your HR, for example, then Craigslist might be asking for trouble. Austin-based startup BidModo is launching a public beta today that hopes to simplify this process for small businesses and provide them with better information to make better decisions, instead of simply relying on word of mouth referrals.BidModo is a bit like the offspring of Yelp, the Better Business Bureau and Craigslist, but much shinier. In reality, comparing it to Craigslist is a bit of a disservice, as it offers so much more than text classified ads and email responses.Instead of just putting an ad out there and getting back simple replies, the responses come from registered companies and are organized on a dashboard. Each company has an on-site profile, containing contact information, a company history, provided services, previous clients, certificates and licenses, and a list of references. Each company also has a rating card, which shows how that business rates with its clients on ten different characteristics, from bid timeliness to industry knowledge. If you’ve ever used something like Craigslist, then you realize how hard, or even impossible, getting all of this information would be. You would practically need to hire a private investigator. For end users – those posting the job – the service is entirely free and provides the user with information about bidders, vendor ratings and a dashboard comparing bids. Vendors only pay for selected leads. A vendor dashboard provides information on ROI, monthly sales data, ratings feedback and industry stats. And part of BidModo’s focus is on local business, so service requests only come from the region, which is something we think people, wherever they are, will stand behind.“Prior to BidModo, I ran a video production company,” said founder Toby Schwartz in a press release. “I would regularly hear of companies in town turning to New York or San Francisco to hire for their video needs. And I can’t tell you how many times I’d meet people in Austin who would comment that they wished they knew I was here.”Currently, BidiModo is live nationally, with over 80 cities and connections in more than 100 different categories. What I See When I Watch the Super Bowl

first_img Essential Reading! Get my 2nd book: The Lost Art of Closing “In The Lost Art of Closing, Anthony proves that the final commitment can actually be one of the easiest parts of the sales process—if you’ve set it up properly with other commitments that have to happen long before the close. The key is to lead customers through a series of necessary steps designed to prevent a purchase stall.” Buy Now Two teams compete. Both teams know how their competitor will play. They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. They will attempt to play their game and prevent their opponent from playing theirs. They will not try to play their competitor’s game in order to win; they don’t want to play where they are weak and their competitor is strong. Both teams will have won and lost competitions. Both won competitions they were expected to lose, and lost competitions they were expected to win. Both will have learned as much or more from their losses than their victories. Each team will have studied and reviewed every contest immediately after its conclusion. Both teams will field their very best players in this must win competition. It won’t be political. No one will play favorites. The decision as to who competes is based on that individual’s ability to make a difference. Both teams will try to control the clock. Each team has an opportunity to play in a way that uses time to their advantage. The more time a team has on the playing field, the more likely they are to win. A team that is deprived of time will struggle to win. Each of the two teams has a process. They will each run their plays in an attempt to position themselves to advance their position. These plays have been thoughtfully designed to maximize the team’s advantages. Every play is designed to score. Neither team will throw caution to the wind and wing it. They will have prepared to execute each play to perfection. When errors are made by one team, the opposing team will attempt to capitalize on the opportunity it presents them. It’s not impossible to win the competition having made more serious errors than your competitor, but it is unlikely. The more cleanly a team executes their plays, the greater the likelihood of their winning the competition. Each team will have coaches helping them to make decisions. In some cases, these coaches will call the plays. When they have the ability to make a difference, they will insert themselves into the game. Both teams will play until the whistle blows. They will leave everything on the field. They know luck has a role in the contest. An error many be made. A lucky break may come their way.At some point, the clock will run out and one of these teams will be declared the winner. The other team will have lost the contest. But that loss won’t mean that the losing team isn’t an excellent team. It will only mean that the winning team won this contest. The season will end, and the next season will begin.last_img read more

ESPN Says These ACC Teams Are College Football Playoff Contenders

first_imgACC football logo.Twitter/@theACCESPN released a roundtable discussion Friday morning in which its college football writers decide just how many College Football Playoff contenders there are in each conference heading into 2016. As you’d expect, ESPN believes the ACC has two playoff contenders – Clemson and Florida State. From ESPN’s Andrea Adelson:For the first time, the ACC has multiple playoff contenders headed into the season: Clemson and Florida State. Their emergence has begun to change the narrative about ACC football, which has muscled its way into the national conversation over the past three seasons. So far, the league is 2-for-2 in getting teams into the College Football Playoff. (It also has the last BCS champion.) Whether it goes 3-for-3 largely depends on its two best teams: The Tigers hope to get back into the playoff for a second straight season behind Deshaun Watsonand seven other returning starters on offense; Florida State hopes to take down the Tigers behind Dalvin Cook and a stout defensive front. They meet Oct. 29 in Tallahassee, Florida. The winner has the inside track, though it probably has to end up undefeated to assure its playoff spot. The ACC has been decided during the annual meeting between the Seminoles and the Tigers for some time now, and that does’t appear to be changing in 2016. Louisville is a young, talented team that could cause some fits, and Miami has a leader in quarterback Brad Kaaya, but the conference will be won on October 29 in Tallahassee. Hydro power storage project to be built near retired Alberta open pit

first_img“We’re repurposing the site for what we believe is a modern grid type of product,” he said, pointing out the project will be able to utilize mine roads and a high-voltage power connection to reduce new environmental disturbances. In November 2013, one of the then-suspended mine’s tailings dams failed, releasing an estimated 670 million litres of slurry into two creeks that fed into the Athabasca River, thus sending fine rock, clay and unrecovered coal particles as far as Lake Athabasca, 500 kilometres away. The mine owner was handed nearly $4.5 million in federal and provincial penalties in 2017.The Canyon Creek facility will consist of two new 40-hectare water storage ponds, connected by a five-kilometre, two-to-three-metre-wide pipeline, Horton said.At night, when power demand is low, water will be pumped from the lower to the upper pond, gaining 500 metres of elevation. When demand is high, the water will flow the other way, turning a turbine generator producing 75 megawatts, enough to power about 50,000 homes, for up to 37 hours at a time.“Typically, the price of power goes down during the night because we’re all sleeping, industry isn’t using it and, in Alberta, in fact, the wind blows stronger at night,” said Horton. Horton said he is also looking for customers to sign long-term contracts but hopes to start construction on the much smaller Canyon Creek project by next spring and have it operational by the end of 2020. He said the capital cost will be in the millions but has yet to be finalized. In its decision, the regulator found that the project “is in the public interest” in terms of social, economic and environmental effects. In February, Alberta’s NDP government unveiled its second request for proposals to build renewable power projects, targeting a total of 700 MW of new capacity, with 300 MW reserved for proposals with Indigenous equity ownership. In the first round last year, three companies were chosen to spend about $1 billion to build four wind power projects capable of generating 600 MW of new generation under 20-year contracts with a set minimum price. The province wants to add up to 5,000 MW of renewable energy through private sector investment of about $10 billion by 2030. “We can be a sponge and soak up that power that’s being produced at night … run our pumps, move that water uphill 500 metres in elevation and then have a fully charged battery, in a sense, ready for 8 a.m. when Alberta wakes up and starts flicking on lights.”The only other pumped hydro system in Canada has been in use at Niagara Falls in Ontario since the 1950s, he said.Calgary-based TransAlta Corp. has proposed adding a pumped hydro component to more than double capacity at its existing 355-MW Brazeau facility on the North Saskatchewan River southwest of Edmonton. It has set 2021 target to start construction, subject to winning a long-term contract.center_img CALGARY, A.B. – A hhydropowerstorage project proposed at the site of one of the worst coal mining environmental disasters in Canada has been given regulatory approval.Turning Point Generation, developer of the Canyon Creek Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Project, says the recent ruling by the Alberta Utilities Commission means it can now seek financial support for what it says would be the first large-scale energy storage project in the province.Canyon Creek is to be located next to the decommissioned Obed Mountain open pit thermal coal mine about 60 kilometres east of Jasper National Park, said Kipp Horton, CEO of Calgary-based WindRiver Power Corp., the parent company of Turning Point.last_img read more

Messi and Suarez lead Barca to Rayo victory

first_imgMadrid: Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez might have been rested but instead both played and scored as Barcelona came from behind to beat Rayo Vallecano, ahead of their crunch Champions League second leg against Lyon. Raul de Tomas’ scintillating strike gave struggling Rayo a surprise lead at the Camp Nou but Messi converted a penalty and Suarez finished a brilliant passing move to seal a 3-1 win, after Gerard Pique had headed in an equaliser on Saturday. Also Read – Dhoni, Paes spotted playing football togetherWhen Barca kicked off, Atletico Madrid had just completed their own 1-0 victory over Leganes, although Diego Simeone was more cautious, resting Antoine Griezmann, Alvaro Morata and Saul Niguez, with Tuesday’s trip to Juventus in mind. “It is normal when there is an important game on Tuesday,” said Simeone, who substituted Griezmann at half-time. “He was not injured, he had just given all that he had to give.” There was always a risk that La Liga’s top two might take their eye off the ball, given Barcelona’s last 16-tie with Lyon hangs in the balance after a goalless draw in France, while Atletico hold a 2-0 lead over Juve but can expect an onslaught in Turin. Also Read – Andy Murray to make Grand Slam return at Australian Open”We have a crucial match on Wednesday,” Ernesto Valverde said. “We know the importance it has for many reasons — because of the opponent, the competition and because we have seen what has happened to other big teams already.” Yet both avoided slip-ups to leave Real Madrid even further adrift in La Liga before they play away at Real Valladolid on Sunday. Barca stay seven points clear of Atletico and, temporarily at least, move 15 ahead of Real. Even with a two-goal cushion for the final eight minutes, Ernesto Valverde kept Messi and Suarez on until the end, which may have surprised some, given he was accused of exhausting key players last season at the expense of success in Europe. Messi’s appearance was his 443rd for Barcelona in La Liga, moving him ahead of Andres Iniesta and behind only Xavi Hernandez, on 505, in the club’s all-time list. Samuel Umtiti started his second match in three months after recovering from a knee injury. “Little by little he is reaching his level,” said Valverde. But Philippe Coutinho was underwhelming again, despite being picked ahead of Ousmane Dembele. He poked an early chance wide after a Messi cross and De Tomas put Rayo in front soon after, driving at Pique before unleashing a sizzling shot past Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Pique headed one Messi free-kick wide and then another in at the near post, nipping in front of Rayo goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski to nod in his sixth goal of the season. Dembele came on for Arthur Melo at half-time and Coutinho dropped deeper, but it was right-back Nelson Semedo that earned the penalty, after a foul from Jordi Amat. Messi made no mistake. Rayo’s belief, and energy, melted away and Barca’s third was their best of the night. Suarez freed Dembele down the right and he found Suarez again with a pull-back. Instead of shooting, Suarez bounced the ball off Ivan Rakitic in the area before finally tapping home. There was nothing as free-flowing at the Wanda Metropolitano where perhaps the greatest show of creativity came from Leganes, whose players wore shirts with the name of their mothers on their backs to celebrate International Women’s Day on Friday. The first half was almost entirely forgettable but despite the absence of attacking punch, Griezmann came off at half-time for Thomas Lemar, with no visible sign of an injury. Griezmann would have taken the penalty soon after, won by Angel Correa with some quick feet in the area, which lured Kenneth Omeruo into a clumsy challenge. Saul stepped up and missed, but tucked in the rebound after Andriy Lunin could only push the ball back into his path.last_img read more

Softball rallies around firstyear coach

New coach, no problem. Despite being saddled with the difficult task of replacing a program legend, first-year Ohio State coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly is embracing her new role at the helm of the Buckeyes softball team. Prior to Schoenly’s arrival from Miami (Ohio), OSU had been under the direction of former coach Linda Kalafatis, who compiled 538 wins and six NCAA Tournament appearances in her 16 seasons leading the Buckeyes. Kalafatis was let go in May after OSU declined to renew her contract. “I have a ton of respect for (Kalafatis) and the coaching staffs she’s brought to the program through the years,” Schoenly said. “We constantly tell the girls she’s part of our tradition … She’s a great coaching legend for the Ohio State softball program and I’m proud to follow in her footsteps.” While replacing a program stalwart is difficult enough, trying to get 21 players, 17 of whom played under the previous regime, to buy into a new coach’s identity can be equally challenging. “Every group of girls is going to have its own mentality,” Schoenly said. “So you just want to embrace the personalities in the group that you have. I’m not trying to change them, you have to find the strength in each kid and let it come out.” With wins against three ranked opponents (No. 8 Georgia, No. 16 Louisville and No. 14 Arizona), Schoenly’s Buckeyes are off to a hot start at 9-6. “I think the team has responded great,” said senior third baseman Megan Coletta. “It was a fresh start for everyone and the (new) coaches made it really easy with how they were open to us and very friendly with us.” Coletta said there haven’t been any issues with the new staff so far and that everything is going smoothly in the early season. “All of our new coaches are really energetic and lively,” said freshman utility fielder Cammi Prantl. “The team’s feeding off their energy and creating our own energy. I think everyone likes the positive environment.” During the transitional period after Kalafatis’ departure and Schoenly’s arrival, the team’s four seniors led off-season workouts to keep the women on the same page and to welcome the incoming freshmen to a coachless environment. “It’s not like we’re just freshmen to them,” Prantl said. “We’ve been included in the group the whole time.” The summer workouts paid dividends for the team’s eventual bonding once Schoenly was named coach. “This summer when there wasn’t a coach at all, the seniors were really involved with keeping the freshmen active,” Schoenly said. “(The seniors) were like little assistant coaches before we arrived, just keeping the freshmen on track and wanting to be here.” With the Big Ten season looming after OSU’s spring break, Schoenly said the real test begins once her team starts conference play against Indiana on March 22. Each day the OSU softball team spends together, they get closer and more familiar with the ways of their new head coach. The team knows the growing pains they suffer now will help them better prepare for the grind of conference play. “The adjustment is having to get to know all 21 (players),” Schoenly said. “You have to find out which buttons to push for which kids, and that takes some time to learn … My goal is to find out which kids fit what roles and to put them in positions to have success.” OSU is next scheduled to take on Maryland on Saturday at 1 p.m. in College Park, Md. read more
