(Image: KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, Facebook)Brand South Africa reporterThe KwaZulu-Natal education department has begun to distribute free sanitary pads to schools in the province to curb the absenteeism and drop-out rate of girls.Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana visited Lamontville High School on 3 February 2017 to hand out feminine hygiene products.“As the Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal we want to ensure that girl learners in KwaZulu-Natal will not have to miss school simply because they are menstruating,” said Dlungwana. The aim of the project is to:Reduce the number of girls dropping out of school because they do not have access to sanitary towels,Educate teenage girls about puberty, hygiene, menstruation and how to physically and psychologically handle this time in their lives,Sustain marginalised girls with annual packs of sanitary pads and to ensure periods do not get in their way of achieving an education, and,Eliminate through informing the myths, taboos and misinformation that people in certain communities have about girls during menstruation.A survey published by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in 2013 shows that girls frequently stay away from school when they are menstruating. The organisation interviewed 99 girls between the ages of 13 and 20 in three rural high schools in eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal.“One third of 99 respondents reported missing school during menstruation, which was typically one day during a menstruation period,” the organisation said. “Fear of having an accident and/or showing blood during school was the primary reason for missing school, followed by physical pain and discomfort.“Tiredness, lack of sanitary products, and fear that others may suspect the student is menstruating were other factors noted by the respondents.”How it worksA circular on the department’s website indicated that sanitary pads would be given to “indigent girl learners quintile 1-4 schools in grade 4-12”.The school’s principal will be responsible for the distribution in each school.ReactionOn social media, the move has been warmly welcomed.“We salute you KZN Department of Education, job well done,” wrote Sebe Mzolo on the department’s Facebook page.@TimesLIVE good move…let’s thank government for once— sine (@Snehope308) February 1, 2017@TimesLIVE best news @kzngov ??— Nonto yamaLangeni (@gaselanonto) February 1, 2017Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? CM: Number of Companies with CM Deployments Double

first_imgThe results of a 2006 survey by AIIM Europe of companies in the UK found that 29% of companies have an Enterprise Content Management (ECM) system in place.  That number is nearly twice the number of companies using ECM in the 2005 survey.46% surveyed said their company plans to spend more or much more on ECM in 2007.  While only 13% of the respondents expected to spend less. Those numbers are now similar to that of the US.  Yet in the UK, only 16% rate their companies as very good or excellent in being able to manage, control and use electronic information.  The survey notes a strong correlation between a company’s business success with their ability to manage electronic data.  Those in the survey who rate their company high in data management are nearly twice as likely to score their company as being more profitable than their industry average. The most challenging aspect of bringing in a content management system is to be able to up-front justify the investment and to gain management buy-in.  27% found integrating change management capabilities into their systems to be the most challenging.last_img read more
