Senate fixes vibrating camera

first_imgOTTAWA — Viewers won’t have to adjust their television sets anymore as the Senate says it has fixed a problem with one of their brand new cameras vibrating during broadcasts. The Canadian Press reported last week that the Senate was forced to bring in a special engineer to deal with wobbly cameras as the Red Chamber started broadcasting for the very first time. While the House of Commons has been televised for more than 40 years, the Senate has only started to broadcast meetings in its main chamber. The decision coincided with the upper chamber being temporarily relocated into a former train station in downtown Ottawa while Centre Block is being renovated. However, “natural vibrations and inherent movements” endemic to older structures had created problems with one camera in particular that wouldn’t stop shaking.Senate spokeswoman Alison Korn says the problem was finally fixed late Friday, meaning Canadians won’t need to take anymore Gravol before tuning in. Vijender Gupta slams Delhi govt for not fulfilling promises

first_imgNew Delhi: The Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, on Sunday issued a statement claiming that his inspections of foot-over-bridges that were supposed to be completed years ago have shown that the Delhi government’s incompetence in fulfilling their promises. With poll dates drawing closer, Gupta went on a full offensive, accusing the AAP-led government in the Capital of being “useless” and blaming other forces for their flaws. The senior BJP leader claimed to have inspected foot-over-bridges that were supposed to be constructed by the Kejriwal government at Mukarba Chowk, Nirankari Samagam, Jahangirpuri, and Jagatpur. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murderIn a statement, Gupta said that the only reason for construction on these bridges to be stalled was callousness displayed by the Delhi government regarding this matter. Gupta further went on to say that the construction of unfinished bridges does not require full-statehood, hence Kejriwal “has no excuse to blame the Central government or BJP for not allowing him to work.” In addition, Gupta claimed that the AAP government’s apparent inaction has led the people of Delhi to realise that BJP must come to power in the upcoming election. “The people have now made up their minds that they will teach them (AAP) a lesson in the coming Lok Sabha elections,” he said. In a tweet tagging the Chief Minister, Gupta also asked him to answer for the delay in constructing these bridges.last_img read more

Lenders hopeful of successful bids for grounded Jet Airways

first_imgNew Delhi: A day after Jet Airways suspended all its flights after running out of money, lenders to the carrier Thursday said they were “reasonably hopeful” that bidding process for the airline will end successfully. Lenders led by the State Bank of India had declined to extend more funds to Jet, forcing it to suspend all its flights. “The lenders after due deliberations decided that the best way forward for the survival of Jet Airways is to get the binding bids from potential investors who have expressed EOI (Expression of Interest) and have been issued bid documents on April 16,” a statement by lenders said. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details A consortium of 26 lenders led by the SBI, with 51 per cent stake in the debt-trapped airline, has invited bids from potential suitors. “Lenders are reasonably hopeful that the bid process is likely to be successful in determining the fair value of the enterprise in a transparent manner,” it said. Banks on Wednesday rejected an immediate Rs 400 crore demand of Jet Airways, compelling it to ground operations. Jet had been, over the last few months, on a decline as competition from budget airlines hurt its profitability and led to a debt pile. It reported losses for four straight quarters despite sales holding up. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday At its peak, Jet operated 123 planes and over 600 daily flights. It was flying just seven planes on Tuesday. Its chief executive officer Vinay Dube on Wednesday wrote an email to airlines’ passengers saying “with deep sadness and with a heavy heart that we would like to share with you that, effective immediately, Jet Airways will be suspending all its domestic and international operations”. “Tuesday night, we were informed by SBI, on behalf of the consortium of Indian lenders, that they are unable to consider our request for interim funding. Since no emergency funding from the lenders or any other source of funding was forthcoming, it would therefore not have been possible for us to pay for fuel or other critical services to keep the operations going,” he wrote. He said the airline had over the last several weeks and months tried “every means possible” to seek funding, both interim as well as long term funding, to keep our operations going. “Unfortunately, despite the very best of our efforts, we have been left with no other choice today”. “A decision like this is never easy to make, but without the interim funding, which we have been repeatedly requesting for, we are simply unable to conduct flight operations in a manner that delivers to the very reasonable expectations of our guests, employees, partners and service providers,” he wrote. “After 25 years of sharing the Joy of Flying with Indian and international guests, Jet Airways and its Board of Directors have been forced to take this extreme measure, as prolonged and sustained efforts with lenders and authorities to ensure the sustainability of the airline did not yield the desired results.” He, however, said the future provides new hope and opportunity as India is better off with a flying Jet Airways. “We will now await the bid finalization process by SBI and the consortium of Indian lenders and will continue to support the bid process initiated by the lenders,” he added. Passengers who had booked on Jet for travel on future dates will get a refund. “We sincerely and profusely apologise for the disruption to your travel plans. We would like to thank you for your continued patronage, support and loyalty over the years. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring the Joy of Flying back to you soon,” he added.last_img read more

Beside The Points For Thursday March 1 2018

Things That Caught My EyeWe put some baseballs in an X-RayAre the balls juiced? Are material changes to the ball an influence on the spike in home runs analysts have found? Commissioner Manfred says that the balls have not changed, but a number of studies from journalistic outfits, this one included, seem to counter that idea. ESPN took the next logical step and did a CT scan on eight MLB balls. The finding? It surely looks like the core of the balls are less dense compared to the control balls from several years ago. Indeed, a layer of pink rubber in the core of the balls was 40 percent less dense in the dinger-era balls than the 2014-2015 era balls. Ohio State athletic department issues counterfeit ticket warning to football fans

The Ohio State athletic department warned fans in need of tickets to OSU football’s homecoming game against Nebraska to beware of counterfeit tickets. The warning urged fans to purchase tickets from The Ohio State Athletics Ticket Office, OhioStateBuckeyes.com or Ticketmaster, the only authorized sellers of OSU athletics tickets. Tickets to the Nebraska game as well as all remaining home games can also be purchased through the Buckeyes TicketExchange at OhioStateBuckeyes.com/ticketexchange. TicketExchange is the only official ticket exchange site of OSU athletics and the only resale source that can guarantee the exchange of valid tickets, according to the Tuesday release. According to the message, fans that use any other source risk purchasing tickets that are “counterfeit, stolen or otherwise void, and as such will not allow the ticket holder admission into the event.” Dan Wallenberg, OSU athletics spokesman, said there have been no reports of counterfeit tickets this season, but there were some circulating toward the end of last year’s basketball season. “We realize it’s a big game and we’re just being proactive, making sure fans are aware that this could happen and to be wary of the possibility,” Wallenberg said. “Realizing the night game, the national TV, the demand for tickets for this particular game, we just wanted to get out in front of it.” OSU police chief Paul Denton did not immediately respond to The Lantern’s Tuesday evening request for comment regarding counterfeit tickets. read more

Mens Lacrosse No 5 Ohio State faces No 11 Notre Dame in

Credit: Sheridan Hendrix | Former Oller ReporterThe Ohio State men’s lacrosse team will face its biggest test of the season to this point when it travels to take on No. 11 Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday.Despite being the only undefeated team left in Division I, the Buckeyes (6-0) have yet to face a ranked opponent this season, and the Fighting Irish (4-2) will be the first.“To beat a team like Notre Dame, you’re going to have to be pretty buttoned up in almost every area, so that’s where our focus has been,” Ohio State head coach Nick Myers said. The No. 5 Buckeyes come into the game with some rest after their game scheduled against Denver last Saturday was canceled due to weather conditions.Myers said he was disappointed in not being able to play, but said the team used its break to come together as a team. But not playing a game since March 9 could prove to be costly for the Buckeyes.“Having two weeks off presents some positives but also so some challenges,” Myers said. “There’s a rhythm that you lose.”Notre Dame got back to its winning ways against Michigan on Tuesday, winning the contest 12-9 off the heels of senior Brendan Gleason’s two goals and an assist. The Fighting Irish also have two ranked wins against No. 4 Maryland and No. 13 Denver. The matchup between the two teams look very similar on paper. Ohio State and Notre Dame have a nearly identical scoring defense, with the Buckeye ranked 12th and Notre Dame ranked 13th. To Myers, the X play will be crucial to the overall success of Ohio State.Ohio State’s sophomore midfielder Justin Inacio has been dominant this season in the faceoff circle with a 63.6 win percentage. Inacio has also been massive on the ground game, ranking No. 5 in ground balls, recording 10.17 per game.Ohio State junior midfielder Christian Feliziani has helped a lot with the faceoff unit, not only with his on-field performance, but through his leadership.“Because of an injury, I couldn’t do a lot in the fall physically, so I tried to use my voice and what I could from the sidelines,” Feliziani said. “I would like to say I was a coach kind of.”Notre Dame  junior faceoff specialist Charles Leonard picked up a career-high 16 ground balls last week against Michigan, and was also dominant in the faceoff play, winning an impressive 20-of-24 faceoffs.Saturday will be the 44th matchup between the teams, with Notre Dame leading the series 34-9.No. 5 Ohio State will take on No. 11 Notre Dame on the road at 1 p.m Saturday. read more

Moving a motion in the House, BJP leader Sanghmitra Maurya requested Speaker Om Birla to punish the SP MP to set an example for others.Lawmakers across political lines criticised Azam Khan’s remark made during the debate on the government’s bill to ban instant triple talaq.Reacting to the controversy, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “This is an abominable act, I appeal to you for exemplary action.”Meanwhile, Om Birla said that he will hold a meeting with leaders of all parties and then make a decision. Today’s motion was seconded by BJD leader Bhartuhari Mahtab and other members in the Lok Sabha.Seeking immediate suspension of Azam Khan from the Lok Sabha, Union Minister Smriti Irani said, “This is a blot on all legislators including men. We cannot remain silent spectators to it. We have to speak in one voice that this is unacceptable.” “This is not a House where men come in and ‘Kisi aurat ki aankhon mein jhanka jaye (look into the eyes of a woman),” Irani added.Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said either Azam Khan should apologise or he should be suspended from the Lok Sabha. Prasad said that the incident was painful. “Rama Devi handled it with utmost dignity. We appeal for the toughest punishment, without compromise,” he said in the House. Also, first-time Lok Sabha MP Mimi Chakraborty condemned the incident. “Nobody can stand in Parliament and tell a woman – look into my eyes and talk. Speaker sir, all women here are expecting something big from you on this,” said the Trinamool Congress lawmaker.Earlier on Thursday, the SP leader courted controversy for his sexist jibes against Rama Devi. He, however, attempted to clarify, saying, “You are my sister, bahut pyari behen (very sweet sister). I have had a long political career, it is not possible for me to say anything bad. If there is a single unparliamentary word in what I said, then I declare my resignation from parliament.”last_img read more

Yellow means you should plan ahead about potential disruption to travel and other day-to-day activities. These are the most common. Amber: A step up from Yellow, an Amber warning means there is an increased risk of disruption/danger to life and property. Red: These are only issued when ‘extreme weather’ is expected. Italian media group Mediaset has won full control

first_imgItalian media group Mediaset has won full control of the mediaset.com domain name after a court ruling.A Rome court ruled that Fenicius LLC must stop using the domain after Mediaset said the company acquired it “with the aim of achieving association with the well-known brand Mediaset.“
The media company said the ruling opened a wider debate into the protection of brand and trade names online. It said: “In this case, an immediate appeal to the courts by Mediaset has produced the desired and expected result. But the fact remains that the issue has become a veritable jungle that needs to be cleared. And legal action cannot be the right solution as it requires companies to invest intellectual and economic resources and helps to clog the civil justice system. The problem is now apparently urgent and would ask the appropriate authorities take note and to act.”last_img read more
