“John is leaving huge shoes to fill,” Fligor said. “There was bay water and boats that floated all the way up to the highway during Sandy. And John had things back up and running in nine months. You can’t ever be completely prepared for an event like Sandy. And God forbid anything like that ever happens again. But I’m part of great team in this town. And we’ll push along, because we have to, because the marina is important to our community.” The marina has more than 700 boat slips and Hubeny said it was close to 100 percent capacity in the 2019 season. The marina operates with a more than $6 million budget and generates $1.5 million in revenue from boat slip rentals for the borough’s tax base. At a meeting Sept. 25, the council appointed Kerri Kennedy to fill his unexpired term. Hubeny said the selection process was rigorous. Fligor’s application was one of 20 the borough received after the position was advertised in various local, county and state newspapers, and online on the New Jersey Marine Trades Association website. “I appreciate the council’s support and I just hope I’m everything you think I am. I’ve served on this council for 18 years… This is a great town. Take care of it,” Fligor said to the council. Fligor, who grew up working on boats in the marina and has had four of his own stored there over the years, will lead one of only eight municipally owned and operated marinas in New Jersey. It’s the single largest of that ilk from Maine to Florida, according to Hubeny. Fligor has served as a councilman for the better part of two decades and has volunteered his time with various organizations for the last 23, including the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society and the Harbor Commission. ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – Louis Fligor’s eyes welled up at a recent borough council meeting when the governing body voted unanimously to name the longtime elected official the municipality’s new harbor manager. But resigning his seat on the council to take the harbor manager position was an emotional moment for Fligor. Atlantic Highlands does not currently have a nepotism policy, but borough administrator Adam Hubeny quickly dismissed the notion. “(Fligor’s) experience might actually be a positive despite the optics,” borough resident Tucker Snedeker told The Two River Times. “The real problem is he got his son-in-law a job at the harbor a few years ago. So how do you get a fair shake as a fellow employee and peer? Who gets the day off or the bonus or the promotion or the better work assignment?” Fligor, 58, officially took the reins of the Marina Sept. 27, and will earn an annual starting salary of $62,500. “Lou’s son-in-law works at the harbor, but there’s insulation there,” Hubeny explained to residents at the Aug. 13 council meeting, noting that all harbor employees report to dockmaster James Osborn. “Mr. Osborne has (worked at the marina) for 42 years. The dockmaster reports to Jim Phillips, who is our DPW director. And if there’s a personnel matter, they will report to me. Normally they would report to the harbor manager, but in this case, if it involves Lou’s son-in-law, they’ll come to me.” The selection committee then interviewed seven candidates and whittled that field down to three potential choices. After a subsequent round of interviews, the committee decided that Fligor checked all of the boxes. Though borough lands are nearly completely built out, Fligor hopes to implement a series of floating boat slips situated in marina waters that will increase capacity and revenue. “It’s something that can be done. It’s part of the vision. But that will take some time,” Fligor said. Though the governing body may have given its vote of confidence, Fligor’s appointment comes with pushback from some residents who wonder if nepotism played a role. According to councilman Steve Borracchia, one of the reasons Fligor was selected for the position is because of his vision to expand the marina’s footprint and make it a more profitable utility. Longtime Atlantic Highlands councilman and community volunteer Louis Fligor has been appointed harbor manager at the marina.Photo by Chris Rotolo Fligor will succeed former harbor manager John Amici who accepted the position in July 2009, not long before the Bayshore was slammed by historic weather events like Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Super Storm Sandy in 2012. “This has to be the least political thing I’ve seen happen in Atlantic Highlands since I’ve been coming to meetings,” said council member Lori Hohenleitner. “Everyone on the harbor commission was fully confident that this was the best person for the job. I’m not necessarily going to be sitting up here for the rest of my life, but if I’ve made one decision that really showed the true character of our town, I’m confident this is one of them.”
1 Geoff Cameron Stoke City have launched an appeal against Geoff Cameron’s red card in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to West Brom. The midfielder was sent off late on in the Hawthorns clash for pushing Claudio Yacob in the back of the neck. The Potters were level at the time but went on to succumb to a stoppage-time winner from Jonny Evans.Hughes criticised referee Lee Mason’s decision to show Cameron a straught red after the game and blasted Yacob’s reaction to the push. Now Stoke have decided to challenge the decision in a bid to overturn the American’s automatic three-match ban.
Building Codes were established a long time ago as a way to ensure a minimum level of safety and sanitation. Plumbing codes keep our houses sanitary. Electrical codes reduce the risk of accidental electrocution and our homes from burning down. General building codes help stop the spread of fire if they do burn, but they also dictate structural stability based on natural calamities such as hurricanes, earthquakes, wind, flooding or temperature conditions as well as man-made events such as fires. It also mitigates slow degradation that can lead to structural catastrophes, like rotting beams or deck ledgers — it seems like every year we hear about a second or third-story deck collapse.Perhaps the most important part of the safety and sanitation mission is dictating a minimum standard without unintentionally creating un-affordability. If no one can afford to buy a home, it doesn’t matter how safe or sanitary it is built. The International Code Council (ICC) publishes the International Building Code, International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code and the International Fuel Gas Code. These codes are the typical reference documents for a new commercial building. The ICC also publishes the International Residential Code (IRC) that is normally the reference document for new homes. The IRC includes architectural, structural, energy efficiency, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas and electrical provisions all in one book, but for new construction. The International Property Maintenance Code sets out the minimum code requirements for existing buildings. This code establishes those conditions that are regarded as unsafe and allows an inspector to order repairs necessary to mitigate the unsafe condition. The International Energy Conservation Code goes farther than the IRC in energy efficiency measures and is more commonly used for commercial buildings.Uniformity and consistency across the nationBuilding Codes have been historically regulated at the local or state level in all 50 states. The need for more consistency has lead to model codes across large regions of the country. The result in the early twentieth century was three separate major codes developed by different associations — the Uniform Building Code (ICBO), the Southern Building Code (SBCCI), the BOCA Basic Building Code (BOCA) and the One and Two Family Dwelling Code (CABO). While this was an improvement, it still was cumbersome for the builders, architects or engineers working in more than one jurisdiction.Worse, the different standards meant that various parts of the United States had higher or lower standards for safety, sanitation and health. However, with the advent of the IRC in 2000, this improved dramatically. The IRC, now in its 4th edition, is adopted in 48 states and the District of Columbia. Now the country is more consistent in building code enforcement that ever before. While the model codes help establish uniformity across the continent, each jurisdiction amends the code to reflect local tradition, custom, or circumstances. Because of this, building codes still sometimes conflict across city, county or state boundaries. Over time, these boundary disputes will become fewer, but thanks to the 10th Amendment to the Constitution, they will always be present. Because of state autonomy guaranteed by the 10th amendment, there will never be a federally enforced building code across all 50 states. Hopefully, there will be more consistency as more states decrease local amendments.

Georgia doesn’t want to see a repeat of this in 2015.Louisville loses a number of defensive stars, including interception machine Gerod Holliman, from last year’s excellent defense, but a pair of Georgia transfers will look to pick up the slack. Josh Harvey-Clemons and Shaq Wiggins both played for current Louisville defensive coordinator at UGA. Harvey-Clemons was directly involved in Georgia’s heartbreaking 2013 loss to Auburn. Nick Marshall’s 4th-and-18 heave deflected off of his hands into those of receiver Ricardo Louis for the game-winning touchdown. That’s the type of play that could haunt a guy for his entire career, but for Harvey-Clemons, the chance to play Auburn again was a major selling point that helped lock up his transfer to Louisville. When former Georgia safety Josh Harvey-Clemons was being recruited to Louisville, one of the unexpected selling points for defensive coordinator Todd Grantham — formerly at UGA as well — was who the Cardinals would play in Harvey-Clemons’ first eligible game with the new program. Auburn. “When he said that,” Harvey-Clemons said, “I just knew it was meant for me to come here, really. I’ve been waiting to play them again. I look forward to it.”With Jeremy Johnson at quarterback, Auburn may be a bit more pass-oriented than they have been in recent years under Gus Malzahn. Harvey-Clemons and Wiggins might have a few opportunities to get some revenge on the Tigers come September 5 in Atlanta. [Courier-Journal]
“We’re repurposing the site for what we believe is a modern grid type of product,” he said, pointing out the project will be able to utilize mine roads and a high-voltage power connection to reduce new environmental disturbances. In November 2013, one of the then-suspended mine’s tailings dams failed, releasing an estimated 670 million litres of slurry into two creeks that fed into the Athabasca River, thus sending fine rock, clay and unrecovered coal particles as far as Lake Athabasca, 500 kilometres away. The mine owner was handed nearly $4.5 million in federal and provincial penalties in 2017.The Canyon Creek facility will consist of two new 40-hectare water storage ponds, connected by a five-kilometre, two-to-three-metre-wide pipeline, Horton said.At night, when power demand is low, water will be pumped from the lower to the upper pond, gaining 500 metres of elevation. When demand is high, the water will flow the other way, turning a turbine generator producing 75 megawatts, enough to power about 50,000 homes, for up to 37 hours at a time.“Typically, the price of power goes down during the night because we’re all sleeping, industry isn’t using it and, in Alberta, in fact, the wind blows stronger at night,” said Horton. Horton said he is also looking for customers to sign long-term contracts but hopes to start construction on the much smaller Canyon Creek project by next spring and have it operational by the end of 2020. He said the capital cost will be in the millions but has yet to be finalized. In its decision, the regulator found that the project “is in the public interest” in terms of social, economic and environmental effects. In February, Alberta’s NDP government unveiled its second request for proposals to build renewable power projects, targeting a total of 700 MW of new capacity, with 300 MW reserved for proposals with Indigenous equity ownership. In the first round last year, three companies were chosen to spend about $1 billion to build four wind power projects capable of generating 600 MW of new generation under 20-year contracts with a set minimum price. The province wants to add up to 5,000 MW of renewable energy through private sector investment of about $10 billion by 2030. “We can be a sponge and soak up that power that’s being produced at night … run our pumps, move that water uphill 500 metres in elevation and then have a fully charged battery, in a sense, ready for 8 a.m. when Alberta wakes up and starts flicking on lights.”The only other pumped hydro system in Canada has been in use at Niagara Falls in Ontario since the 1950s, he said.Calgary-based TransAlta Corp. has proposed adding a pumped hydro component to more than double capacity at its existing 355-MW Brazeau facility on the North Saskatchewan River southwest of Edmonton. It has set 2021 target to start construction, subject to winning a long-term contract. CALGARY, A.B. – A hhydropowerstorage project proposed at the site of one of the worst coal mining environmental disasters in Canada has been given regulatory approval.Turning Point Generation, developer of the Canyon Creek Pumped Hydro Energy Storage Project, says the recent ruling by the Alberta Utilities Commission means it can now seek financial support for what it says would be the first large-scale energy storage project in the province.Canyon Creek is to be located next to the decommissioned Obed Mountain open pit thermal coal mine about 60 kilometres east of Jasper National Park, said Kipp Horton, CEO of Calgary-based WindRiver Power Corp., the parent company of Turning Point.

Brandon Moore is no longer going to play for the Dallas Cowboys. After a change of heart, just a day after Moore verbally agreed to a one-year contract with the Cowboys, he decided to retire from the game all together. At the old age – by NFL standards – of 33 Moore didn’t want to quit, but after failed attempts to get his asking price of $3 million to $4 million, he decided it was time to move on with his life.“I was wrestling with it all night,” Moore told FOXSports.com’s Mike Garafolo on Wednesday. “I was excited, but when you start looking at all the personal factors that go into it and the commitment on the football side and you’ve been in a different mental state also the past three or four months because no action’s been happening, you kind of move on with your life.”He went on to say, “I was happy with that and fine with that. But when you get a call from a coach I care deeply for in (Cowboys offensive coordinator) Bill Callahan, you start to feel it, you get excited and you’re finally like, ‘I want to do it.’ But you map out the logistics of it all — the physical and mental commitment, the tear on your family.”Moore was rated fourth best guard in the NFL last season. A dominant run blocker and pass blocker protector for the Jets in 2012, he hasn’t missed a start since 2004. Moore still has a lot of play in him, and would have been a valuable addition to the Cowboys. It’s a shame he gave it all up.

New Mexico State travels to Columbus to face No. 17 Ohio State Saturday on Halloween. The Aggies (3-5, 1-3) are not expected to give the Buckeyes (6-2, 4-1) much of a scare, but OSU coach Jim Tressel remains firm in his stance that his team cannot afford to overlook any opponent.Purdue held a record of 1-5 when it upset OSU in West Lafayette, Ind.“To me, focused is having a moment-by-moment awareness of what needs to be done,” Tressel said. “I don’t feel like we did a great job of having that focus or awareness a couple weeks ago. … Purdue did what you have to do. They got five takeaways, they did this and they did that. If we have an understanding of what needs to be done today, we go do that as well as we can do it.”Saturday’s contest is a rare non conference game, breaking up the eight-game Big Ten slate. While the Aggies hope to come into The ‘Shoe and trick a confident Buckeye squad, their struggling defense could be a treat for a progressing OSU offense. New Mexico State has allowed 28 points and nearly 370 yards of offense per game. After five turnovers and only 18 points against Purdue, the Buckeye offense produced more than 500 yards against Minnesota during Saturday’s 38-7 victory.Tressel said he was satisfied with the evidence of offensive progression, which must continue this week against the Aggies.“I hope that they do understand that the progress we make or we don’t make will affect the next time we play when we get back in the conference. They seem to be a group that is willing to take instruction and if it’s reasonable, if it makes some sense, yeah, it makes some sense, we need to get better, well, let’s go get better. I don’t think that’s going to disrupt us.”The injury bug has taken its toll on the Buckeye roster, especially at running backs. Against Wisconsin on Oct. 10, Dan Herron reinjured the ankle he had sprained two weeks earlier, and Brandon Saine suffered a concussion during last week’s rout of Minnesota. Both backs’ statuses are up in the air, Tressel said.“If Brandon Saine is cleared, Brandon’s playing,” he said. “If ‘Boom’ Herron is cleared, he’s going to play. This is an important game, that’s one thing. We need to get better. That’s just as important. So the best chance you have to get better is on Saturdays.”New Mexico State has had its share of quarterback struggles. Jeff Fleming and Trevor Walls have split the duties, combining for four touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while completing just 52 percent of their passes. No matter how inferior an opponent the Buckeyes might face on any given week, Tressel said he wants his troops concentrating on improving.“This is game nine,” he said. “We’ve got to progress. I’m not sitting here today saying, you know what, I think we’ll put this guy in or that guy in. No, we’re going out all barrels blazing and do what the situation calls for.”
Usually when someone is getting jumped on by a group of men it is a bad thing. For freshman Logan Schuss, though, getting jumped on was a good thing.“At first it wasn’t the best; I couldn’t breathe. But after that it was good,” Schuss said.Schuss was at the center of his team’s overwhelming celebration after Ohio State’s men’s lacrosse team won in overtime Saturday 11-10, after blowing a three-goal lead. Coach Nick Myers constantly encourages team to play a full 60 minutes each time out, but on Saturday they needed a little extra. With the score tied at the end of regulation, the Buckeyes went into sudden-death overtime. One minute and 10 seconds into the overtime, Schuss was able to find the back of the net for the win.“There’s no love for each other, so it’s always nice to come out and beat these kids,” senior goalie Brandon Freeman said. The Buckeyes were able to get the win, but it didn’t come easy.OSU only trailed once in the game when the score was 1-0, but they were never able to pull away.“We knew going into the game there was going to be a run,” Myers said.On multiple occasions, the Buckeyes had two-goal leads and once had a three-goal lead, but Penn State fought back each time. The Buckeyes even had a two-goal lead with less than three minutes to go in the game, but they were unable to close out the Nittany Lions.Myers said he told his team to hang in there. He told them it would take heart and hustle to win the game.OSU was out-shot by Penn State by 24 and won nine fewer face-offs.Schuss was named conference Rookie of the Week last week and he threw his name back in the mix for next week’s award. Along with the game-winning goal, Schuss assisted on four other goals.Along with Schuss, senior Mario Ventiquattro brought his “A” game. Ventiquattro was able to find the back of the net four times. The Buckeyes got the win, but not without injuries. Midway through the fourth quarter, Matt Kawamoto suffered a shoulder injury. With the win, the Buckeyes will take a two-game win streak on the road to play Robert Morris on Tuesday.
There is evidence to suggest the Ohio State versus Michigan football rivalry does not possess the same venom it once did, but the 2011 installment of “The Game” could reignite a once-passionate shared hatred between the two schools. The Buckeyes and Wolverines matchup has lacked interest of late, with Ohio State claiming six consecutive victory against “that team up north.” Not included in the winning streak is OSU’s 37-7 drubbing of Michigan in 2010 which was later vacated as part of the Buckeyes’ self-imposed penalties for NCAA rules infractions.During a Tuesday press conference, OSU coach Luke Fickell was asked if OSU players still define their careers by their performances against Michigan as they have been in years past.“It’s still the Ohio State-Michigan game, still the greatest rivalry in all sports,” Fickell said. “We wouldn’t attack it any other way.”Whether Fickell is correct or not, the fact that the question was asked suggests that some are speculating about “The Game’s” true significance.Fickell, along with Michigan coach Brady Hoke, has resorted to name calling in a vain attempt to emulate the way former OSU coach Woody Hayes would exchange barbs with the late, former Michigan coach, Bo Schembechler.Hoke has taken to referring to OSU as simply “Ohio,” and Fickell said Tuesday that his team wasn’t planning on using “hokey” trick plays against Michigan.“No pun intended,” a smiling Fickell said immediately following the remark, which elicited laughter from reporters.Hayes and Schembechler are dead — let’s not pretend that mimicking the “Ten-Year War” between Hayes and Schembechler’s “Ten Years” smack talk is going to bring this rivalry back to life.Methinks these quips aren’t necessary in order to restore the rivalry. The 2011 installment of the game should do the trick. The Buckeyes are 7 1/2-point underdogs heading into Saturday’s showdown at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., according to a Tuesday listing on Vegas.com.It’s unfamiliar territory for Buckeye Nation to see its football team predicted by experts to lose to Michigan, but a possible result could be the revitalization of the lukewarm OSU-Michigan rivalry.Should Michigan win Saturday and reclaim bragging rights for the first time in eight years, that would surely get Buckeyes fans’ blood boiling in Columbus, Ohio.A Michigan win could also put a stamp on what has already been a successful regular season campaign in Ann Arbor. After all, Michigan can clinch a share of the Big Ten Legends Division title, should Michigan State lose to Northwestern.Michigan State will represent the division in the inaugural Big Ten Title game, though Michigan is also No. 15 in the Bowl Championship Series standings.A win by OSU, which would extend its winning streak against the Wolverines to seven games, would be considered an upset, a bitter disappointment to Michigan fans that would likely restoke the flames of this feud.A seventh consecutive victory against Michigan would improve OSU’s overall record against the Wolverines to 44-53-6.If there was ever a year when Buckeye Nation would appreciate beating Michigan, it would be 2011. After months of reading of the football program’s misdeeds and waiting to hear of the NCAA’s punishment, which still yet to be announced, OSU fans would savor every bit of an upset win in Ann Arbor. The two coaches can’t breath life back into “The Game” with hot air, but this weekend could and should. The stage is set, and either an OSU or a Michigan win figures to cure what ails the wayward rivalry.Game on, boys and girls.
Niklas Sule has been left amazed by Manuel Neuer’s impressive comeback from injury after the goalkeeper played a competitive training match for GermanyThe Bayern Munich captain sustained a broken foot in September last year, which left him out of action for their entire campaign with Sven Ulreich having occupied his place in the squad since as they won a sixth successive Bundesliga title. However, Germany boss Joachim Low included Neuer in his preliminary squad for next month’s tournament in Russia with the aim of properly assessing the 32-year-old’s fitness levels before making a final decision.Neuer continued with his progress from injury by playing in a test match for the Germany u20 side against the senior side and completed 30 minutes. The captain now looks set to be confirmed in Low’s final 23-man squad and Sule could not hide his admiration for him, who he calls the “best keeper in the world”.“At first I couldn’t believe it, when Manu did his first training after four months out and sensationally saved one ball after the other. It was as if he had never left,” said the defender, according to Goal.“I hadn’t witnessed something like that before. His body language is simply incredible.Top 5 Bundesliga players to watch during the weekend Tomás Pavel Ibarra Meda – September 11, 2019 With the international activity cooling down for the next month, we go back to the Bundesliga’s Top 5 players to watch next weekend. The German…“He is the best keeper in the world, and for me, it is great to play with him at the Bayern and cause him problems by shooting my swirling shots on goal.”A fit Neuer is normally the undisputed number one at Germany and assistant coach Thomas Schneider backed him to be ready to start if required.“The coaches Jogi [Low, head coach] and Andi [Kopke, goalkeeping coach] talked to Marc-Andre, who had a very good season and is an important part of the team since the Confederations Cup last year and who got even better this year,” he said.“But Manu is a complete goalkeeper. His name, the way he moves, his presence on the pitch and his technical skills. He has been named the world’s best goalkeeper for a reason.“Of course it is no easy situation for Marc now, but when you have such an unbelievably good goalkeeper in your team like Manuel, you want him to play.”Neuer is expected to play in his first proper competitive match against Austria on Saturday in a friendly.
England’s Danny Rose has started to understand how football can overwhelm people after experiences in the club game that he “wouldn’t wish on anybody”.Rose received an outpouring of goodwill from the public and fellow players after opening up about his struggles with mental health. He explained how a lengthy injury lay-off and the suicide of an uncle led him to visit a psychologist and spend a number of months on medication. The Tottenham left-back intends to help other sufferers after the World Cup, using his revelations to shine light on the side of professional football rarely seen.Asked why he is so honest, Rose told IRN via Evening Standard:“I don’t know, really.“It is the best job in the world, don’t get me wrong, but I think people seem to think there’s no other issues within football. You just get your money at the end of the month and you play every week.Crouch: Liverpool could beat Man United to Jadon Sancho Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Peter Crouch wouldn’t be surprised to see Jadon Sancho end up at Liverpool one day instead of his long-term pursuers Manchester United.“You know, there’s so much more to football than what people may see on a Saturday. I don’t believe in hiding that from people.“Even though I feel very privileged to play football, it’s not something I would – with the things I’ve experienced within the game – be shouting from the rooftops to recommend to people’s children to be a footballer.“Because there are a lot of things that happen on a day-to-day basis at club football that I wouldn’t wish on anybody.”Rose would not go into specifics but added:“There’s pressure, there’s politics – there’s loads of things.“There’s not just playing on a Saturday and you receiving your money at the end of the month. There’s so, so much more to football than what people see.
Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has thanked the supporters after he scored a brace in their 4-2 victory at home against Tottenham Hotspur.Aubameyang converted a first-half penalty and scored a second-half equalizer as Arsenal came from behind to win 4-2 against Spurs in Sunday’s North London derby.“We had a great first half but after the first goal we conceded, we had a moment where we were a bit down,” Aubameyang told the club’s website.“At half-time we were confident. We spoke and we knew that we could do it in the second half, to come back. We did it. Then we had the fans behind us and we had power, we felt strong. We went for the win.”Merson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson. The victory took Arsenal to fourth place in the table, but Aubameyang insists that their performance is more important.“I think the most important thing right now is the performances. Of course, we want to continue this form and we’re still winning games,” he said.“We’re unbeaten, so it’s great at the moment. We just have to keep going.”

Facebook Google YouTube A memorial for victims of the terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand. A gunman stormed two mosques in the city and shot worshippers, live streaming one of the shooting sprees. Marty Melville/Getty Images Australia’s biggest telecommunications carriers have blocked “dozens” of websites that continue to host footage of the mosque shooting in New Zealand. Australia’s largest carrier Telstra issued a statement on Tuesday local time saying it had blocked a number of sites still hosting the footage, which shows a gunman storming a mosque in central Christchurch and gunning down worshippers as they prayed. Australia’s other major carriers Optus and Vodafone confirmed they had also blocked a number of sites. “We understand this may cause inconvenience for some legitimate users of these sites but these are extraordinary circumstances and they required an extraordinary response,” said Nikos Katinakis, Telstra group executive of Networks and IT. “We appreciate that it is necessary to ensure free speech is carefully balanced against protecting the community, but with these sites continuing to host disturbing content we feel it is the right thing to do to block them.”Vodafone issued a similar response, saying it blocked dozens of sites to stop the further spread of the video and that it was lifting the blocks once it became aware the footage had been removed. The move follows swift action taken by New Zealand carriers in the aftermath of the shooting to temporarily block sites hosting the footage and request it be taken down. 2 While Telstra didn’t name the blocked sites, CNET was able to confirm that message board sites 8chan, 4chan and Voat were longer accessible through the Telstra network. The alleged shooter behind the attack, an Australian national living in New Zealand, posted links to the livestream of the shooting as well as a lengthy screen justifiying his actions, on 8chan before the shooting. The extraordinary decision by Australian carriers follows powerful statements from the country’s top politicians on Tuesday, criticising social media networks such as Facebook for allowing footage of the shooting to spread. US lawmakers have also ordered companies including Facebook and Google, which owns YouTube, to appear before the House Committee on Homeland Security. The companies have been asked to explain their responses to the events on Friday and their plans to tackle the spread of extremist content on their networks. Ford’s emissions certification program is currently under the scrutinizing eye of the federal government.Ford on Friday announced as part of a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it’s currently subject to a criminal investigation from the Department of Justice. The investigation is focused on Ford’s emission certifications program, which is used to determine fuel-economy figures and emissions compliance. At the heart of the investigation is the “road load” estimation, which during a dynamometer (dyno) test estimates the force imparted on a vehicle from tire rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag and other factors. In its SEC filing, Ford was quick to stress that this has nothing to do with defeat devices like those found in VW’s diesel vehicles. Defeat devices are intentional pieces of hardware or software meant to skirt testing processes, which is a fancy way of saying “cheating the government.”Enlarge ImageEven inadvertent mistakes can be costly. Ford The Department of Justice declined to comment. In a forwarded statement, Ford said, “Our focus is on completing our investigation and a thorough technical review of this matter and cooperating with government and regulatory agencies.” In its SEC filing, Ford said it is “fully cooperating with all government agencies,” and that the automaker had already notified other state and federal agencies. Ford said in the same filing that it “cannot provide assurance that [the investigation and potential outcome] will not have a material adverse effect” on the company.Ford first announced that it was looking into its own emissions certification processes in February. At that point, a statement from the automaker said that there was “no determination that this affects Ford’s fuel economy labels or emissions certifications.” At the time, Ford hired a third-party firm to investigate its methodologies, which it did after several employees voiced concerns about the tests late last year.Road-load and coastdown estimation have caught automakers in a bad way before. In 2014, Hyundai and Kia paid a $100 million civil fine after bad road-load data led to incorrect fuel-economy ratings on about 1 million vehicles. Mitsubishi admitted in 2016 to administering coastdown tests incorrectly. This year, Porsche said it was looking at data for the 2016-2017 911 after it discovered potential discrepancies with individual coastdown tests.Originally published April 26, 7:46 a.m. PT. Shops owned by Muslim in Sri Lanka attacked as tensions remain after Easter Sunday bombingstwitterSri Lanka said on Monday it was temporarily blocking some social media networks and messaging apps, including Facebook and WhatsApp, after mosques and Muslim-owned businesses were attacked in the wake of Easter bombings by Islamist militants.Several dozen people threw stones at mosques and Muslim-owned stores and a man was beaten in the town of Chilaw on the west coast on Sunday in a dispute that started on Facebook, sources told Reuters.Authorities said they arrested the author of a Facebook post, identified as 38-year-old Abdul Hameed Mohamed Hasmar, whose online comment “1 day u will cry” locals said was interpreted as threatening violence.Authorities arrested a group in the nearby areas of Kuliyapitiya and Dummalasuriya later on Sunday and early on Monday for allegedly attacking Muslim-owned businesses, a police source told Reuters.Military spokesman Sumith Atapattu said people in the area then demanded the arrested men be released.”To control the situation, a police curfew was imposed during the night,” Atapattu said. The flare-up in violence came three weeks after Sri Lankan Islamist bombers blew themselves up in four hotels and three churches, killing more than 250 people.Since then, Muslim groups say they have received dozens of complaints from across the country about people being harassed. Other communities say they are fearful that the government, which failed to act on successive warnings about looming Islamist attacks, has not caught all potential militants.Sri Lanka has used temporary bans on social media in an attempt to curb misinformation and rumours.”Social media blocked again as a temporary measure to maintain peace in the country,” Nalaka Kaluwewa, the director general of the Department of Government Information, told Reuters on Monday.A violent clash erupted a week ago in Negombo, where more than 100 people were killed during Easter prayers, between Muslims and Christians after a traffic dispute. The government also imposed a ban on social media after that clash.
Ariful Haque ChowdhuryThe Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has finally kept trust in its incumbent mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury by nominating him as its mayoral candidate for Sylhet City Corporation polls billed for 30 July, reports UNB.BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi came up with the announcement at a press conference at the party’s Naya Paltan central office on Wednesday. He said their party’s nomination board picked Ariful as the party’s mayor runner in the Sylhet city polls. The BNP leader said Ariful is also the candidate of the BNP-led 20-party alliance. On Sunday, the party nominated incumbent mayor Moasaddek Hossain Bulbul as its mayoral candidate for Rajshahi while party leader Mujibur Rahman Sarwar for Barishal city polls, dropping current mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal. The elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal city corporations will be held on 30 July.On 20 June, BNP’s nomination board took interviews of 17 party nomination aspirants at party chairperson’s Gulshan office to finalise the party’s mayoral candidates to contest the elections to the three city corporations.According to the election schedule announced by the election commission, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is 28 June, while the dates for scrutinising those are 1 and 2 July, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is 9 July.BNP candidates Bulbul, and Ariful Haque and Ahsan Habib Kamal were elected mayors in Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city polls respectively in 2013.BNP insiders said the party dropped Barishal mayor Kamal this time as local leaders and activists are unhappy with him.

Facing trauma in childhood can significantly change the structure of the brain, which may result in severe depression which could even be recurrent in adulthood, say researchers. The results from MRI scan images suggest that both childhood maltreatment and recurring depression are associated with similar reductions in the surface area of the insular cortex, part of the brain that regulates emotion and self-awareness. This reduction could make a future relapse more likely, said the study, published in The Lancet Psychiatry journal, which found childhood maltreatment one of the strongest risk factors for major depression in adulthood. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”Given the impact of the insular cortex on brain functions such as emotional awareness, it’s possible that the changes we saw make patients less responsive to conventional treatments,” said lead researcher Nils Opel from the University of Munster in Germany. The study included 110 patients aged 18 to 60 years. Of the 75 patients who experienced a relapse, 48 had experienced one additional episode, seven reported two episodes, and six experienced three episodes. Fourteen had a remission period of less than two months and could therefore be regarded as having chronic depression. The findings are to develop or improve risk-adapted interventions for people susceptible to a worse long-term clinical outcome. Future research should therefore explore how the findings could be translated into care and treatment that could improve patient outcomes.
In an effort to be more accessible, more transparent and more “in your face,” entrepreneurs are looking to live webcams to broadcast their business. Check out how these four companies are leveraging the power of streaming footage–and learn how you can, too.Beachwood BBQThe idea: Live snapshots in 15-minute intervals of the restaurant’s beer menusWithin a year of opening in 2006, Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach, Calif., had upped its beer list significantly. But it became quite a chore for co-founders Gabriel Gordon, 31, and Lena Perelman, 32, to update the list online. The website often went untouched for weeks, Gordon says, which was bad for customers who arrived expecting a specific beer on tap.The byproduct: There are certainly no more disappointed customers, Gordon says. And in addition to increasing page hits, it’s helped boost the restaurant’s sales, too, from $635,000 in 2007 to about $1.4 million last year. The unexpected: Gordon says, “There are people on the East Coast who’ve written saying they check [the Hopcam] every day.”Lisa P. MaxwellThe idea: Live feeds (with chat capabilities) on the company’s 32 employeesAndrew Miller, 42, knew Lisa P. Maxwell’s website needed reviving to fit the Chicago creative marketing agency’s buzzworthy style. Miller says, “The sense of transparency and open honesty really appealed to me.”The byproduct: In the first month after the application went live last fall, there were about six blog posts about it daily, Miller says. The 7-year-old company works to get buzz for its clients, so it’s more convincing “to a client when we can say we’ve also done it for ourselves.”The unexpected: Miller says the innovation did present some issues, including inappropriate messages and personal chat.Sugar Hooker EntertainmentThe idea: Live, weekly TV shows onlineWhen Jerra Spence, 29, launched Sugar Hooker Entertainment in 2004, it quickly transformed into a fully integrated, multiplatform lifestyle brand for teenage girls. She says, “Instead of it being all about commerce, it ended up being all about community.” And that’s where the weekly girl culture variety show came in. Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global March 12, 2009 40%of SMBs Plan to Add Customer reviews to their websites this year; 26% plan to incorporate video.(Source: The Kelsey Group)The byproduct: Since launching SHE TV through Stickam.com in October, the site has attracted more than 37,000 weekly viewers. “It’s grown my e-commerce sales significantly,” Spence says–to nearly $2 million last year. The unexpected: With the success of the variety show spawning others, she says, “I think it’s going to end up being an almost 24-hour entertainment channel.”DogtopiaThe idea: Real-time footage of dog day-care franchise facilitiesEver since Amy Nichols, 35, opened her first Dogtopia center in 2002, she wanted customers to be able to easily check on their pooches. “When I had to kennel my dog, I felt really guilty,” she says. So through OnlineDoggy.com, a provider of pet-care webcam systems, Nichols launched the webcam feature in 2005.The byproduct: “Customers love it, and it’s a big selling point,” Nichols says. While the system can be expensive upfront, “it only takes one [happy] customer for the franchisee to realize the value.”The unexpected: The live webcams double as security cameras and training tools. 3 min read Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Global analyst firm CCS Insight has unveiled a series of thought-provoking predictions for 2019 and beyond at its annual event in Central London.Among its more interesting media-related forecasts is that SVOD platform Netflix will open its own branded cinema by 2022, a move that will allow it to diversify and promote its catalogue and increase loyalty among subscribers by offering special screenings.Among predictions regarding machine learning, autonomous cars and Facebook’s plans for extending its reach, CCS Insight also expects that, by 2023, unlimited data will be the default option for mobile tariffs in advanced markets.“As the value of mobile data continues to be eroded, competitive forces pressure operators to offer all-you-can-eat data bundles in the same way voice minutes and texts are sold today. Many tariff plans include unlimited data.”In the wireless arena, the company predicts that a “huge variation” in users’ experience of 5G in 2019/20 will result in a marketing headache. “Differing operator strategies will result in vastly different levels of performance and coverage. This will exacerbate the challenge of marketing 5G technology; it risks frustrating users as they try to compare oversimplified promises based on raw speed.”On the voice assistant front, the company expects more activity in the enterprise market from 2019. “With Amazon’s Alexa for Business already launched and Microsoft experiencing a growing number of queries into Office 365 from Alexa users, 2019 brings formal competition in speech assistants for enterprise/workplace.”Speech advances also mean it will be “possible to talk to almost every new connected consumer device sold in Western markets. Strong recent progress in speech recognition drives the trend, alongside greater integration with personal assistants such as Amazon’s Alexa.”Biometric-based smartphone security, phones with folding screens and increasing penetration of Chinese smartphone operating systems are other key features of CCS Insight’s crystal ball gazing. Returning to bricks and mortar, the company also anticipates Amazon buying a major retailer in Europe by 2019.CCS Insight CEO Shaun Collins said: “This year marks the biggest CCS Insight Predictions event to date. The sheer number of predictions reflects the expanding coverage of our research, from new topics like workplace collaboration and edge computing to mobile networks, devices and the Internet of things”.
In This Issue… * Currencies stuck in a rut… * Good bond auctions in Spain and France… * N.Z. unemployment rises… * Central Banks get weaker currencies… And, Now, Today’s Pfennig For Your Thoughts! Hung Out On A Line… Good day… And a Tub Thumpin Thursday to you! Well… I’ve been here for a week now, I have another conference to speak at starting tomorrow, and into the weekend, and then back home for a week before I head to Las Vegas… Before we get into the goings on today, I want to make this your first reminder that Mother’s Day is May 13th… Which is only 10 days away… If your mom is around, this is your chance to say thank you for being your mom… I lost mine in 1998… and each year at Mother’s Day, I find myself thinking of her… OK… just your first reminder, I’ll try to remind you again as we draw closer to May 13th… The currencies are still in rut, VS the dollar this morning… they haven’t lost more ground, just stuck in a rut… The euro, should have gained on the news that Spain was able to auction bonds this morning and meet their target, while France sold bonds and saw their yields drop. These two auction results should have eased the minds of those fearing the Eurozone countries will struggle to finance their borrowings.. Well, at least for now… I find this new very encouraging, in that the European Central Bank (ECB)’s 1 Trillion-euro LTRO (3-year loans), is fading, and therefore the demand you see for these bonds from Spain and France is “real demand”… not the kind where yields were held low because they were previously artificially held down by EB buying… But the euro is being hung out on a line this morning, waiting to hear what ECB President, Mario Draghi, is going to say in the press conference following the meeting where he will announce no change in rates… Euro traders are waiting to see if Draghi pulls a rabbit out of his hat of Central Bank tricks… So… for the euro today, it’s a case of you can’t do anything right as far as the markets are concerned… and I am concerned about what Draghi has to say, for he has really thrown the euro under the bus, to promote growth, which is exactly what we all expected when a Club Med President (Italian central bank) was put in the position of ECB president! In a case of “this should have been better for us than that”… The New Zealand dollar / kiwi, was the worst performer of the night, moving downward VS the U.S. dollar and the Aussie dollar (A$), in response to a very weak labor report. New Zealand 1st QTR unemployment rate jumped to 6.7%, from the previous quarter’s 6.4% figure… So, that was not so good for kiwi… but in reality, I think it was a knee jerk reaction to the number, for N.Z. unemployment has remained in a range of 6-7% for over two years now… On the side of “this should have been better for kiwi than the labor report”… The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ), who used to be what I would call a “prudent Central Bank”, but kind of lost their way, brought some of that prudency back last night when they introduced a number of prudential policy changes, based on lessons from the global financial meltdown, in order to further strengthen the New Zealand financial system… For instance, the RBNZ seeing that financial institutions are more vulnerable than previously thought to contagion effects from financial shocks, due to the likelihood of liquidity contraction, decided to “up the game on bank liquidity requirements”, including their Core Funding Ratio, and they also address the Capital Requirements under the new Base III framework. Another thing the RBNZ announced was a framework to remove the tax payer funded bail-outs when banks fail… and there were more responses… See? Now, isn’t insuring that their financial system will remain viable during the next financial meltdown better for kiwi than a labor report? Or at least it’s a tie! This is the kind of stuff that I really get the hair on the back of my neck to stand up for… Central Banks doing what they should be doing, and not financing 61% of Treasury Auctions in one year, or running the printing press 24/7, or implementing stimulus packages that have been shown to not really work in the long run (see Japan, circa 1995-2012)… The sun is rising on the ocean this morning… I’m sitting on a deck overlooking the ocean, while I write the Pfennig… Now this is the way to write! I have my I-Pod playing. I’m even drinking coffee while I write today, normally I wait until I’m finished writing before I partake in a cup of coffee, as I want what I write to be pure Chuck! But not today… I’m actually having a good time writing this morning! Ok… sorry for that commercial break! Back to the tape! Don’t you just love it when someone always has a better way to do something than what you’ve chosen? Or a better idea, or a better anything? Well, I do… and to that is why I dislike any U.S. official that goes to China and tells them “how to do things better”… For instance, yesterday, U.S. Treasury Sec. Geithner told the Chinese that “a stronger, more market-determined currency would … blah, blah, blah… the thing that catches my eye, is that Geithner tells the Chinese they need a stronger currency, when the one he is somewhat responsible for is worth about 3-cents, and will someday trade to its intrinsic value… If having a strong currency is so important, then why doesn’t the Treasury Sec. go back to Washington and sit down with the President, Big Ben Bernanke, and Congress… He’ll get about as much reaction to that thought as he did in China! On sidebar… I participated in a CFA poll this week… 926 people responded, and 60% of them said that “hedge funds impact on the financial system can best be characterized as: Destabilizing… 21% said immaterial, and 19% said stabilizing… I voted as destabilizing… as their use of shorting, leverage and derivatives cause an outsized impact on the financial markets… Size matters, and when large amounts of money come into a market the market moves… that can be good, or bad… depending on what side of the trade you reside! OK… back to regular programming… yesterday we saw another regional manufacturing index print weaker, the NY ISM index printed at 61.2 falling from 67.4 in March… So, once again I say, Riddle me this Batman, how can the national ISM print an increase when all the regionals have printed weaker? The ADP Employment Change data that is supposed to give us an indication of the Jobs Jamboree which will print tomorrow, showed that in April, the country added 119,000 jobs… Which was much weaker than the forecast of 170,000.. Today, we’ll see another labor report called the Challenger Jobs Cuts… of course, none of this really gives us an indication of the Jobs Jamboree, because of all the “adjustments” the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) makes before printing… And of course with it being a Tub Thumpin’ Thursday, we’ll see the latest Weekly Initial Jobless Claims for last week… look for 380,000 Gold & Silver have traded down this week… I shake my head in disgust at the things going on behind the curtain with these two… The demand for the two metals remains strong… Last week at the Casey Conference, every person that stopped by our table, eventually wanted to know about our Gold & Silver offerings… Eventually, the demand will win out over the price manipulators… In the category of Central Banks that have deep sixed their currencies besides the Fed and the dollar… we see the Brazilian real, and the Indian rupee… nasty moves these two have made in recent weeks, and it all comes back to the Central Bank’s moves to get their currency weaker… I told you a few weeks ago, that it appeared to me that the markets had given up on the Brazilian real, and that has really played out since… I had a Casey Conference attendee stop by the table on numerous occasions last week, and kept asking me if I was sure about the Swiss franc being pushed lower by the Central Bank… Seems the attendee only wanted to buy francs… I said, “that’s fine, but you need to be aware that the Central Bank did a defacto devaluation of 10% last September, and are talking about more”… I probably said that about a dozen times last weekend! Then There Was This… OK… yesterday, I talked about the future price of Oil… and said that well respected analyst, Porter Stansberry, had forecast a $40 price of Oil in the next year… I then went on to talk about what a great country we are, and why that shouldn’t be something we can’t get to… I then talked about the CPA… what a dork! I meant the EPA! A lot of you thought I was agreeing the Mr. Stansberry… Well, I wasn’t agreeing with him, I was saying “why can’t we do that”? and then gave a few examples of why it will be difficult to get to… Marin Katusa over at the Casey Research team, wrote a long article about how this will be difficult… You should try to go to www.caseyresearch.com and find that report… Marin does a great job! To recap… the currencies are stuck in a rut… the euro is being hung out on a line by the ECB meeting today, after seeing some very good results from bond auctions in Spain and France this morning… The New Zealand dollar / kiwi is the worst performer overnight, as their unemployment rate gained in the 1st QTR, and that has put the kyboshes on the hopes of reversing the emergency rate cuts from last year. U.S. data continues to be weaker, except the National Manufacturing data, which still is puzzling to Chuck… Currencies today 5/3/12… American Style: A$ $1.0295, kiwi .8030, C$ $1.0170, euro 1.3135, sterling 1.6180, Swiss $1.0930, … European Style: rand 7.73, krone 5.7435, SEK 6.7540, forint 215.20, zloty 3.1675, koruna 18.9690, RUB 29.53, yen 80.35, sing 1.2420, HKD 7.7590, INR 53.41, China 6.3053, pesos 12.94, BRL 1.9220, Dollar Index 79.26, Oil $104.85, 10-year 1.93%, Silver $30.48, and Gold…. $1,646.70 That’s it for today… running a bit later this morning… the sun in my eyes, and all that! HA! My beloved Cardinals thumped the Pirates last night.. A day game at Busch today, and I’m 1,100 miles away! UGH! Our Blues take the ice again tonight in L.A. Good Luck Boys! Skate, boys skate! Have you ever heard The Buckinghams song Mercy, Mercy, Mercy? It really gets me moving on the bench here on the deck! I know another 60’s song… from 1965 to 1977, most of the best rock & soul music was created… Alex scored 5 goals in his Water Polo game last night, as his team won… and I missed that too! UGH! Updated at 6:23 p.m. ETHundreds of students and faculty at two universities in Los Angeles have been asked to stay home unless they can prove that they’ve been vaccinated against measles. The LA campuses of the University of California and California State University imposed the quarantine after they became aware of people infected with measles who had potentially exposed hundreds. At UCLA, a student exposed at least 500 people earlier this month; at Cal State, someone with measles went to a library and encountered hundreds.California officials said Friday the two campuses have more than 650 students and staff under quarantine order.UCLA was notified by the LA County Department of Public Health that one of its students had contracted measles. After identifying people the infected student might have come in contact with while contagious, the school asked them to provide proof of immunization. On Wednesday, 119 people who couldn’t provide proof were quarantined.Of those, dozens were able to prove immunity and were released from quarantine by Thursday afternoon. But 82 were still quarantined, and “a few may need to remain in quarantine for up to seven days,” the school said in a statement.”Considering the time that has elapsed since the last possible exposure to the individual with measles on April 9, the highest risk period for developing measles has already passed — and the period during which symptoms may appear is nearing the end,” UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said.Los Angeles County declared Monday that the county was facing a measles outbreak, with international travel leading to five confirmed measles cases, including students from UCLA and Cal State L.A. So far this year, 38 people have been infected with measles in California, state officials said, according to the Los Angeles Times. As of Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was reporting 695 cases of measles from 22 states — the highest it’s been since measles was ostensibly “eliminated” from the country in 2000. There’s been a 300% increase in the number of measles cases worldwide over the first three months of 2018, according to the World Health Organization. “That increase is part of a global trend seen over the past few years as other countries struggle with declining vaccination rates and may be exacerbating the situation here,” the CDC said. Fireside Chat | July 25: Three Surprising Ways to Build Your Brand Microsoft Adds Read Aloud Feature to Word August 1, 2017 Image credit: Drew Angerer | Getty Images Matthew Humphries Add to Queue Learn from renowned serial entrepreneur David Meltzer how to find your frequency in order to stand out from your competitors and build a brand that is authentic, lasting and impactful. –shares This story originally appeared on PCMag This week Microsoft rolled out a number of new features heading to Office 365. The stand out addition is a feature called Read Aloud in Word, which you’ll eventually find available under the Review tab on the Word menu.Microsoft offers a range of tools that come under the heading of Learning Tools in Word. They exist to “help you improve your reading skills by boosting your ability to pronounce words correctly, to read quickly and accurately and to understand what you read.” Read Aloud falls squarely into the “read quickly and accurately” category. When enabled, Read Aloud allows you to hear any given Word document being read out loud while each word is highlighted simultaneously. By going through this process, Microsoft believes it is easier to recognize and correct errors. And because Read Aloud happens within the existing work flow, it’s easy to rectify each error as soon as it becomes apparent.Microsoft also views Read Aloud as beneficial for users with learning disabilities such as dyslexia. It should allow for improved reading and accuracy, and ultimately more error-free documents.Other new features of note include the ability to turn text into timelines in PowerPoint and support for 3D objects in Office apps. PowerPoint Designer tracks any times, dates and associated topics placed in slides and can intelligently create professional-looking timelines using that information. As for 3D support, Word, Excel and PowerPoint will all accept 3D objects from the Remix 3D catalog. In PowerPoint, you can even create cinematic animations using Morph on those objects. For now, these new features are being made available to Office Insiders, but Microsoft says they will “reach general availability later this year” for all Office 365 users. May 18, 2018 Download Our iOS App Image credit: Aaron P. Bernstein | Getty Images It’s hard to know what to make of the testimony on legalized marijuana from Robert Patterson, chief of the Drug Enforcement Agency, before the House Judiciary Committee earlier this month. He attributed deaths to marijuana use but offered no information to back that up. He said he didn’t see “mass incarcerations” of marijuana users, even though FBI numbers show they increased in 2016 (the last year numbers are available). He said he was unaware of the many studies showing that opioid use has dropped in places where marijuana is legal. For example, in Canada, where medical marijuana is legal at the federal level, a recent study showed a “significant reduction” in opioid use in just six months. The House Judiciary Committee held the meeting to discuss the opioid crisis. Both prescription opioids and street drugs account for about 115 overdose deaths each day in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those deaths, about 40 percent involve prescription drugs. While opioids were the topic, marijuana repeatedly came up during Patterson’s testimony (available here online in its entirety). Here are some of the highlights on marijuana that many have taken issue with or at least found very curious.Related: Racial Injustice and the Legal Marijuana IndustryUnaware of StudiesThe DEA currently lists marijuana as a Schedule I drug, meaning it has a high potential for abuse and no medicinal value. In his testimony, Patterson said that marijuana remains a Schedule I drug “because of the science.”However, when asked by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Florida, Patterson said he was unaware of the often-referenced 2017 study by the National Academy of Sciences that found “conclusive or substantive evidence” that marijuana effectively deals with chronic pain issues.Patterson also did not know about state studies from Minnesota and New Mexico about decreased use of opioids where marijuana is legal, or the similar findings of a study from the Journal of the American Medical Association. Gaetz appeared baffled that the head of the DEA would be unaware of such studies. However, Patterson did eventually say he is in favor of more study, although he also said he believes legalized marijuana is contributing to the country’s substance abuse problem.Related: To Touch the Plant or Not: What Type of Cannabis Business Should You Start? Not Seeing Arrest IssuePatterson also noted that he hears repeated references to arrests of marijuana users. “I don’t see a huge enforcement presence but I hear this statistic all the time about this mass incarceration of users…and I don’t see it,” he said. Those numbers come from the federal government itself. The FBI released data last year showing that the number of people arrested for marijuana increased in 2016, and accounted for more arrests than murder, rape, aggravated battery and robbery combined.Overall, the number of arrests for marijuana increased 12 percent to about 653,000 arrests nationwide. While the FBI numbers did not break out possession vs. other charges, historically possession of small amounts makes up the majority of marijuana arrests. A detailed study of marijuana arrests between 2001 and 2010 by the American Civil Liberties Union found that 88 percent of all arrests were for simple possession of marijuana.Patterson also said he knew of marijuana-related deaths, but when pressed on the issue he had no information on-hand to back that up.Related: New Study Will Explore Medical Marijuana as a Treatment for Autism“Dangerous Environment”Patterson did say he supports more research into marijuana. However, research is stymied because the federal government currently only allows marijuana grown at one location at the University of Mississippi for use in study. However, Patterson said personally he thinks the country is in a “dangerous environment” when it comes to legalizing marijuana given what he now knows about what fuels addiction issues in the United States. He did not elaborate. He also said, under questioning from Gaetz, that he believes legalized marijuana adds to the substance abuse problem in the country. When asked what studies show that medical marijuana would increase the use of opioids, Patterson said, “I don’t know.”In an opinion piece for The Hill, Paul Armentano, deputy director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, wrote that when thousands of Americans are dying from opioid overdose “it is almost inconceivable that the DEA would willfully and publicly maintain such a Flat Earth position with regard to the use of medical cannabis as a potential alternative.”To stay up to date on the latest marijuana related news make sure to like dispensaries.com on Facebook The nation’s top drug enforcement officer was unflinching in his opposition to legalizing marijuana and apparently not embarrassed by his complete ignorance of the relevant science. Kooser –shares December 1, 2006 Magazine Contributor What’s Push E-Mail? Everybody’s doing it: messaging on their phones and PDAs. Push e-mail, which automatically synchronizes your messages with your wireless handheld as soon as they land on your mail server, is taking off like IM. The heavy lifting is done by a server that syncs your office and away inboxes so you don’t have to do it manually, or continuously check for new messages. It’s a small service that was quite difficult and expensive to execute when Research in Motion introduced it on its BlackBerry devices several years ago. Now, push e-mail is getting cheaper and reaching a wider audience via BlackBerry web services. And solutions like Good Technology’s Good Mobile Messaging and Visto bring push e-mail to smartphones and devices other than the BlackBerry. Seven Networks also has several affordable push solutions for internet-based e-mail.And Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphones will benefit from Microsoft’s new Direct Push Technology. A great example is Hewlett-Packard’s Windows Mobile 5.0 iPAQ hw6900 that sports cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth links and built-in GPS navigation. Microsoft’s Mobile 5.0 Messaging and Security Feature Pack not only handles e-mail, but also updates tasks, contacts and calendar items.More push is good news for mobile entrepreneurs. Just be sure to check with your cellular service provider to see which devices and services it supports.Safety FirstGet extra security at lower prices with new Wi-Fi gear.Lots of growing businesses buy their Wi-Fi gear at the same stores consumers do. Small-office networking equipment is low-cost, easy to set up and easy to get your hands on. But a little more security, flexibility and bandwidth couldn’t hurt. In fact, several manufacturers have come out with Wi-Fi gear with the features businesses need at only slightly higher prices than consumer hardware.High-end security features are especially important if you’re transmitting sensitive financial data or accommodating telecommuters and other mobile employees. The inexpensive Linksys WRV200 Wireless-G VPN Router with Rangebooster supports VPN encryption for communications with remote workers. This $80 (all prices street) router can also deliver quality voice and video to multiple SSIDs and VLANs. For $230, Linksys’ newest small-business router will add intrusion prevention to VPN.The WRVS440N Wireless-N Gigabit Security Router also supports faster and farther draft-n transmissions and comes with four gigabit Ethernet ports. Business buyers can even pick up wireless access points equipped with Power Over Ethernet to power their devices through the cable rather than an outside power cord. Register Now » Kate Taylor Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business Next Article Is alcohol in its liquid form is too limiting? Be on the lookout for “Palcohol” – a powdered alcohol that could hit stores by fall. The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau recently approved seven versions of Palcohol, created by wine entrepreneur Mark Phillips. The product comes in rum and vodka form, as well as in powdered mixed-drink flavors like “Powderita” and Cosmopolitan.Once the products hit liquor store shelves, one pouch will be equal to one shot of alcohol. The company’s website – which once included edgier references to sneaking Palcohol into venues where alcohol is famously expensive or snorting powdered alcohol – attempts to showcase Palcohol as a convenient take on familiar liquors.Related: Like It or Not, ‘Pizza Cake’ Could Soon Be a Thing”Think of Palcohol as liquor….just in powder form,” reads the site. “It will be sold anywhere where liquor can be sold and a buyer must be of legal drinking age to buy it.”While the patent is still pending for Palcohol, if and when the product is released it will be a game changer not just for college students trying to get drunk cheap, but also for retailers and lawmakers. Just as Four Loko, nicknamed “blackout in a can,” raised concerns regarding caffeine in alcoholic beverages that resulted in the drinks ban in several states in 2010, Palcohol promises to open discussion on the issues and dangerous of powdered alcohol.Amazingly, some state governments saw this coming – almost 40 years ago. In 1978, California passed a law stating that alcoholic tax laws will “apply with respect to powdered distilled spirits in the same manner and to the same extent as with respect to other distilled spirits.” Related: 8 Totally Weird Fast-Food Items That Everyone Is Talking About Reporter Add to Queue

He also accused the BJP of threatening and forcing the councillors to join it.”Some councillors from Kanchrapara and Halisahar had joined the BJP a few days ago. Ten of these councillors have rejoined the TMC today. They were forced and threatened to join the BJP. But now the two municipalities are back under TMC,” Abhishek Banerjee told a press conference.Several TMC MLAs and over 50 municipal councillors had last month joined the BJP after it made deep inroads in West Bengal in the Lok Sabha polls. “It is BJP’s tendency to try and bloat their numbers by giving false data,” Abhishek Banerjee said.Earlier today, BJP leader Mukul Roy had announced that as many as 107 MLAs of West Bengal are set to join the BJP. Without revealing the names of the MLAs, Mukul Roy claimed that 107 MLAs from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) will join the saffron party.Speaking at a press conference, Mukul Roy said that all the lawmakers are in contact with the state BJP leadership. He also said that the party has a list prepared for all the MLAs of Congress, TMC and CPM who would be joining the BJP.Reacting to Mukul Roy’s claims, Abhishek Banerjee said that the BJP leader has not been able to secure his locality councillors and has been changing his statements.”Roy is not able to secure his locality councillors. Earlier he used to say 100 MLAs now 107 MLAS, then he will say total 294 will join BJP. People who rejoined TMC today said that they were forcibly taken to Delhi to join BJP. Others are also in contact with our party, they want to come back,” Abhishek Banerjee said. The development has come just two days after at least 10 Congress MLAs in Goa switched to the BJP in presence of party working president JP Nadda and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and amid the Karnataka crisis where 16 Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs have tendered their resignation to the Speaker. Also Read | 107 Congress, TMC, CPM MLAs will join BJP, claims Mukul RoyAlso Read | 3 Congress rebels, one BJP MLA sworn in as Goa MinistersAlso Watch | BJP leader Chandra Bose demands probe into TMC’s allegation over fake BJP membership card with Mamata’s imageFor the latest World Cup news, live scores and fixtures for World Cup 2019, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
