Daycare runners enjoy prize giving day. (Image: BizCommunity) Sasko, the bakery, launched the Siyasizana Day-care Project for day cares in Tembisa, in Gauteng in late September 2015 – and the pre-school centres are already reaping the rewards. When the project was launched, there was a simple request made of day cares: collect used Sasko bread bags that would otherwise be thrown away, and redeem them for items such as mattresses, backpacks, basins, carpets, chairs and even fridges or stoves.Siyasizana is isiZulu for “we are helping each other”. The project mobilised Tembisa residents to work together to support of their local day cares by all collecting their plastic bags. In total, 300 000 bread bags were collected, exceeding the expectations of all involved.“We looked at the number of bread bags being discarded and the needs of the day cares in Tembisa,” Riaz Badroodeen, the brand manager of Sasko Bread, told SA Goodnews. “By collecting these bags to recycle, we are able to assist the mamas with the basic needs to make their day care environments more comfortable, ultimately benefiting the children in their care.“Collecting bags is a small gesture, with a large impact. With a tidy sum of 300 000 bags, participating day cares will now be able to refrigerate food, prepare cooked meals, provide blankets to keep children warm, and set up tables and chairs during activity and meal times.”THE PROJECT IS ON-GOINGThe success of the project now means it will be rolled out in other parts of the country.“Based on the success of the programme in Tembisa, we plan on rolling out the Sasko Siyasizana Day-care Project in other parts of South Africa. As the programme grows, we’ll continue to look at the needs of the participating day cares and how Sasko can assist,” Badroodeen said.Jane Mokgonyana of Tender Care Day Care was the ultimate winner after collecting 20 000 of the 300 000 packets. Runner-up Matema Mashilo from Bophelong Day Care collected 10 050 bags and was closely followed by Nanini Day Care, where Nomthandazo Mkhondwana collected a total of 9 550 bags.Seven other day cares in Tembisa also won something for their contribution to the project.Sasko Siyasizana Day-care Project is an ongoing programme hosted and implemented by Sasko Bread. Ford’s emissions certification program is currently under the scrutinizing eye of the federal government.Ford on Friday announced as part of a US Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it’s currently subject to a criminal investigation from the Department of Justice. The investigation is focused on Ford’s emission certifications program, which is used to determine fuel-economy figures and emissions compliance. At the heart of the investigation is the “road load” estimation, which during a dynamometer (dyno) test estimates the force imparted on a vehicle from tire rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag and other factors. In its SEC filing, Ford was quick to stress that this has nothing to do with defeat devices like those found in VW’s diesel vehicles. Defeat devices are intentional pieces of hardware or software meant to skirt testing processes, which is a fancy way of saying “cheating the government.”Enlarge ImageEven inadvertent mistakes can be costly. Ford The Department of Justice declined to comment. In a forwarded statement, Ford said, “Our focus is on completing our investigation and a thorough technical review of this matter and cooperating with government and regulatory agencies.” In its SEC filing, Ford said it is “fully cooperating with all government agencies,” and that the automaker had already notified other state and federal agencies. Ford said in the same filing that it “cannot provide assurance that [the investigation and potential outcome] will not have a material adverse effect” on the company.Ford first announced that it was looking into its own emissions certification processes in February. At that point, a statement from the automaker said that there was “no determination that this affects Ford’s fuel economy labels or emissions certifications.” At the time, Ford hired a third-party firm to investigate its methodologies, which it did after several employees voiced concerns about the tests late last year.Road-load and coastdown estimation have caught automakers in a bad way before. In 2014, Hyundai and Kia paid a $100 million civil fine after bad road-load data led to incorrect fuel-economy ratings on about 1 million vehicles. Mitsubishi admitted in 2016 to administering coastdown tests incorrectly. This year, Porsche said it was looking at data for the 2016-2017 911 after it discovered potential discrepancies with individual coastdown tests.Originally published April 26, 7:46 a.m. PT. One of the largest producers of aluminum in the world, Norsk Hydro, was hit by a cyber attack in the company’s IT system on Monday evening affecting major parts of its smelting operations. The attack which escalated overnight and which is still ongoing has caused the company to resort to manual operations at its smelting facilities. The company’s website is currently down and it is posting updates to Facebook. Hydro said that IT systems in most business areas are impacted. According to a statement to BBC, Hydro said that the digital systems at its smelting plants were programmed to ensure machinery worked efficiently. However, these systems had to be turned off. The company is unsure what type of cyber attack it is facing or who is responsible. “We are working to contain and neutralize the attack. It is too early to assess the full impact of the situation. It is too early to assess the impact on customers. We have established a dialogue with all relevant authorities”, the firm updated on their Facebook post. “They are much more reliant today on computerised systems than they were some years ago. But they have the option of reverting back to methods that are not as computerised, so we are able to continue production”, a Hydro spokesperson told BBC. According to Reuters, “The company shut several metal extrusion plants, which transform aluminum ingots into components for car makers, builders, and other industries, while its giant smelters in countries including Norway, Qatar and Brazil were being operated manually.” A Norwegian National Security Authority (NSM) spokesperson said, “We are helping Norsk Hydro with the handling of the situation, and sharing this information with other sectors in Norway and with our international partners.” Hydro is arranging a press meeting on Tuesday, 19 Mar 2019 at 14:00:00 GMT where it will inform everyone about the cyber-attack. We will keep you updated as and when updates to this story is announced. In the meantime, you can check out Norsk Hydro’s Facebook wall for updates.
