Bubba Bolden will not start in Saturday’s game

first_imgSophomore safety Bubba Bolden will not start on Saturday, Helton said. (Emily Smith | Daily Trojan)No. 15 USC’s final practice before the start of the regular season brought with it a number of personnel updates for Saturday’s season opener against UNLV.Head coach Clay Helton walked into the post-practice press conference with a crumpled slip of paper in hand. On it lay the names of sophomore outside tackle Austin Jackson, senior linebacker Porter Gustin and redshirt senior tackle Toa Lobendahn, among others.Jackson will probably play, Helton said. Gustin might. Lobendahn is questionable. But the biggest name who will miss Saturday’s game will be starting safety Bubba Bolden, who is out of the lineup due to an undisclosed reason.“From a personnel standpoint, Bolden is not going to be available for the UNLV game Saturday,” Helton said at the press conference. “There’s no timetable for his return, and I can’t comment further at this time.”Until Helton made the announcement, it was believed that Bolden would make the first start of his career at safety against the Rebels. When pressed, Helton did not speak further.“Like I said, I have no comment further at this time right now,” he said.Redshirt freshman Isaiah Pola-Mao will start in Bolden’s place, Helton said, and redshirt sophomore C.J. Pollard and freshman Talanoa Hufanga will back him up.Pola-Mao redshirted his freshman year, and will get his first career start come Saturday.Hufanga, a true freshman from Crescent Valley High School in Oregon, might see action in his first-ever game as a Trojan as a result of Bolden’s absence. He finished his 2017 season with 44 tackles — seven of which were for a loss — a fumble recovery, and 35 receptions for a total of 696 yards. More injuriesHelton did provide details on other key injuries the Trojans have heading into the season, beginning with Jackson.“I know that from an injury standpoint we were talking about Jackson yesterday,” Helton said. “He looked very good today. Anticipate him playing in the game.”The 6-foot-6 sophomore only saw action in four games during his freshman campaign, but is slated to play against the Rebels after injuring his ankle during the offseason. Gustin’s name was also on the list, but Helton wasn’t quite as dead-set on the outside linebacker, who is still recuperating from a torn meniscus suffered on the third day of summer training camp. “Gustin looked very good again,” Helton said. “We will evaluate later.” He left out whether Gustin will see playing time on Saturday, which will likely be determined Friday according to Helton.Lobendahn, on the other hand, is still being evaluated with a pectoral strain.“Lobendahn did not practice today, still questionable for the game,” Helton said. “[He is] not looking as good as [Gustin or Jackson].”Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the Coliseum on Saturday.last_img read more

Arsenal defeat Vietnam in historic match

first_imgArsenal strolled to a 7-1 victory on Wednesday over Vietnam’s national team in a match which saw the first English premier league club play in the Communist country.Olivier Giroud drove home the first goal just five minutes into the game to rapturous applause from the packed stadium. He secured a hat-trick just moments before the end of the first half.Action gathered pace in the second half, despite hot and humid temperatures, with Arsenal scoring another four goals. As the humidity turned to rain, Vietnam fought back with a goal close to full-time, but the two minutes of extra time wasn’t enough to save them.Arsene Wenger’s team will wrap up their pre-season tour in Japan with two more friendlies. They beat an Indonesian team 7-0 late Sunday.Premiership clubs are very popular in Vietnam – much to the detriment of local teams. Around 25 000 fans turned out to cheer Wenger and his players at My Dinh National Stadium during the training session Tuesday night.Devoted fans have been following the North London team since they arrived in the capital on Monday. But one fan made such a big impression that he was invited to lead Arsenal onto the pitch for the game on Wednesday, according to media reports. The fan, dubbed “Running Man” by the club, was filmed from the window as he ran alongside the team’s bus for several kilometres. He was eventually allowed onto the bus to get his shirt signed. Despite the team’s popularity, the Gunners’ historic trip doesn’t come without controversy. The team’s sponsor in Vietnam, business group Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL), was the subject of a report in May by Global Witness, a campaign group which highlights abuses related to the exploitation of natural resources. The group accused HAGL of acquiring vast amounts of land and contributing to environmental and human rights abuses at its rubber plantations in Laos and Cambodia. HAGL, which is run by one of Vietnam’s richest men, Doan Nguyen Duc, denied the accusations.“As a large listed company, we always abide by the laws and regulations of countries where we do business, and we meet all the environmental criteria of Laos and Cambodia,” he was quoted as saying in state-run newspaper Viet Nam News in May.last_img read more

Women’s World Cup 2019: Sweden secures spot in last 16 with win over Thailand

first_imgKosovare Asllani made it 2-0 when excellent footwork at the byline allowed her to squeeze the ball inside the near post from a tight angle. The forward wastefully volleyed over soon after but a third did arrive before halftime, Boonsing only able to parry Fridolina Rolfo’s powerful long-range drive into the net. Women’s World Cup 2019: Updated group stage results and standings Sweden booked its place in the last 16 of the Women’s World Cup with a comfortable 5-1 victory over Thailand in Nice.Having left it late to overcome Chile 2-0 in its opening fixture in Group F, Peter Gerhardsson’s side needed just six minutes to take the lead on Sunday. Linda Sembrant managed to get to Elin Rubensson’s deep free-kick before goalkeeper Waraporn Boonsing to score the opener, potentially paving the way for a landslide victory.Yet a Thailand team that conceded a record 13 goals against the United States managed to do a solid job of damage limitation following the early setback.
