Image via: ipm.iastate.eduAgriculture Minister Matthew Walter says government is continuing to take steps to prevent the Black Sigatoka, leaf spot disease from entering the country. The agriculture minister told parliament today that if preventative measures are not taken it could cost a significant amount of money to control. “We in Dominica need to take into consideration the financial situation globally and the monies that we would be using to control and manage Black Sigatoka can be used otherwise. This is why it is imperative. The people of Dominica need to understand the seriousness of that threat,” he said.He said persons travelling to countries where Black Sigatoka is present, must take the necessary step to sanitize themselves before they come back to Dominica.“The disease is airborne. It can be caught by your clothes and then we can see the infestation of this which we do not want to welcome here at all,” he said.Meantime Walter said government continues to invest heavily into the agriculture sector.“We have always given agriculture priority. We realize the significance of agriculture and Dominica has always been the country that provides the rest of the region with food,” he said.Dominica Vibes Newscenter_img Sharing is caring!
