Letters to the Editor for Tuesday, Nov. 26

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionRegulate location of stores selling CBDThe Nov. 20 Gazette article on the proposed CBD oil store in Niskayuna should raise some real concerns. The article pointed out that the difference between hemp and marijuana is the percentage of THC.Ms. Sosnow articulated all the concerns every parent should have regarding this shop being so close to the high school. You can be sure that when the governor gets recreational marijuana legalized in New York state that these CBD distributors will be selling it.Unfortunately most of the towns in Schenectady County do not have regulations where these CBD or marijuana shops can be located. The only town in the Capital District that does is Clifton Park.I brought this issue to the Rotterdam Town Board earlier this year, but they have taken no action to control these shops. These shops have no place near schools, parks or any place young children are. CBD by any other name, is still marijuana.Robert J. GodlewskiSchenectadySupport moratorium on D’burg solar sitesAt the Nov. 14 Duanesburg Town Board meeting, Supervisor Rodger Tidball provided residents with an opportunity to protect their property values when he announced the possibility of a six-month moratorium on utility-scale solar power plants.I have been requesting this assistance since July, when inadequacies in the town of Duanesburg solar law became apparent during the planning review of two 5 MW solar plants to be sited at 13590 Duanesburg Road. This site is less than one mile from a third approved solar facility. If all three power plants are built, my home will be adjacent to 75 acres of solar panels for the next 30 years.Other residents need to be aware that our solar laws do not prohibit this density of solar development. The best way to protect your investment in Duanesburg is to attend the Town Board meeting on Dec. 12. We must demand that the town enact the moratorium so that stronger solar laws can be written that will protect our property values. Join the Facebook group Duanesburg Neighbors to keep informed.Lynne BruningDuanesburgFind better ways to help cities in needGloversville residents should be indignant again for being ignored by the governor’s $10 million downtown revitalization award, this time to Utica.Gloversville is still trying to dig out of the depression left by the glove industry departure. While its charming old-time downtown architecture survives, roofless buildings remain to be removed, while sewage infrastructure is in need of replacement.Rather than one large, grandiose award, struggling upstate cities would be better served by handing out million-dollar awards to 10 cities, even if annually. It seems the governor is using this pot of gold for political purposes rather than to help the needy.David ChildsJohnstownMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesGov. Celtics vs. 76ers: Time, TV channel, how to live stream

first_imgThe attitudes surrounding Philadelphia and Boston couldn’t be in a more polar opposite state. The 76ers are rolling. Last week they took the Eastern Conference arms race to a new level, acquiring Tobias Harris and other players at the NBA trade deadline. Their new starting lineup consisting of Ben Simmons, JJ Reddick, Jimmy Butler, Joel Embiid and Harris is now arguably the best in the league, even better than Golden State’s, and has been tabbed by local media as “The Phab Phive.”  MORE: Watch Celtics vs. 76ers live with fuboTV (7-day free trial)The 76ers are 2-0 since the big acquisition, including a 23-point blowout of the Lakers on Sunday in which Embiid had 37 points and newly acquired Harris dropped 22.Meanwhile tensions in the Celtics’ locker room are beginning to boil over. On Thursday, Boston blew an 18-point lead to the Lakers, losing on a buzzer beater from former Celtic Rajon Rondo. Things got worse two days later when they were booed off their home court following a blown 28-point lead against the Clippers. Adding insult to injury, Kyrie Irving left in the second quarter with a knee injury, and veteran forward Marcus Morris called out his team afterward.Marcus Morris went off on his Boston Celtics after the team blew a 28-point lead and lost at home to the Clippers on Saturday: https://t.co/DZr8dKqQGI pic.twitter.com/Agx5J0hn8X— Sporting News (@sportingnews) February 10, 2019Despite the opposite trajectories in team morale, the 76ers and Celtics are neck-and-neck in the standings. Boston has grossly failed to meet preseason expectations of title contention with the insertion of Irving and Gordon Heyward back into its lineup from a year ago. Despite the addition of the all-stars to the starting lineup, the 76ers hold a one game lead over the Celtics for the 4-seed.Here’s how to watch the Eastern Conference matchup live on TV and stream online. What time is Celtics vs. 76ers? The Celtics play the 76ers on Tuesday, Feb. 12. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET.Celtics vs 76ers TV channel, live streamThe game will be broadcast nationally on TNT. It can also be streamed live online with fuboTV, which offers a free seven-day trial.Where is Celtics vs. 76ers being played? Thursday’s game will be held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It’s the final home game before the All-Star break for the 76ers, who have one four of their last five there. The Celtics are an even 13-13 on the road.last_img read more

Phillies’, Nationals’ Twitter accounts trade jabs in Bryce Harper’s first game back in Washington

Jury gets case of McDonald’s strip search

first_imgCOURTS: Trial revolved around hoax call to woman who said she was “petrified.” By Brett Barrouquere THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. – A jury on Thursday began deliberating the case of a woman who said she was forced to strip in a McDonald’s back office at the behest of a caller posing as a police officer. The jury forewoman also told the judge that one juror wanted to see a clip of the security video taken of the strip search. McDonald said if there were still questions after reviewing other evidence, he would allow the jury to see the video clip. Ogborn was 18 and working at a McDonald’s in April 2004 when she was told to strip after a man called the store, claiming he was investigating a theft. At one point during the 31/2-hour search, the assistant manager’s boyfriend was left to handle the phone call. Donna Jean Summers, the assistant manager, was convicted of unlawful imprisonment. Her former fiancee, Walter Nix Jr., is serving a 5-year sentence for sexual abuse and other crimes. During the trial, jurors saw over an hour of a security video, on which a nude Ogborn performs sex acts on herself and Nix. Ogborn’s attorney, Ann Oldfather, asked Ogborn why she didn’t leave the manager’s office during the assault, particularly when she was left alone. “I was scared, and I was petrified,” Ogborn said. “I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t know if this was my last day on Earth.”160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! McDonald’s has said Ogborn is responsible for whatever damages she suffered for not realizing it was a hoax. The trial so far has lasted four weeks. After about two hours, jurors asked to review some of the evidence. Judge Thomas McDonald said he would allow jurors to see a copy of the employee handbook Ogborn signed, but he denied requests to review a map showing the locations where other hoax calls were received and a timeline of events. last_img read more
