Big Bash League 2017: Dwayne Bravo creates history with 400th T20 wickets

first_imgThe Melbourne Renegades beat the Hobart Hurricanes by seven wickets to kick their Big Bash League 2017 campaign off on a winning note in Hobart.Dwayne Bravo starred with the ball while Cameron White’s unbeaten 79 and Marcus Harris’ 34-ball 50 helped the Renegades reach the target with nine balls to spare in their BBL 2017 opener. It was Bravo who set the game up after the Renegades elected to bowl after winning the toss. He bowled four one over spells and returned with figures of 5/28 to help the Melbourne side restrict the Hurricanes for 164/8 from their 20 overs. This was DJ Bravo’s second five-wicket haul in T20s. Not only that, he also became the first bowler to reach the 400-wicket mark in the shortest format of the game.Hobart’s opening pair — D’Arcy Short and Alex Doolan scored 48 from five overs before Bravo’s array of slower balls bamboozled Doolan and then took him out, caught at short third man. Short’s troubles against spin compared to his class against pace was out in the open when when Brad Hogg slid one into his front pad as he was out leg-before while trying to sweep.Ben McDermott and George Bailey then started the counter-attack and took 22 off Hogg in the 11th over of the innings. That over moved the total to a healthy 102/2.Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi then came into the act and delivered an excellent over in the following over, conceding just four runs. Following that, the Hurricanes were struggling to get boundaries and went 17 balls without one. Bravo came back on and reaped the reward of the pressure and got McDermott’s wicket, who was caught off another slower ball.advertisementGreat start of @BBLofficial @RenegadesBBL @newbigdog47. 5 wk pic.twitter.com/O5zJGME982- Mohammad Nabi (@MohammadNabi007) December 21, 2017The Hurricanes spluttered from there with Nabi bowling four overs for just 25 and picking up Bailey. Matthew Wade was the only one to hit Bravo over the rope before he became the seamer’s fifth victim off the final ball of the innings. The Hurricanes failed to gain momentum since as Nabi continued his tight bowling. He returned with figures of 1/25 from his four overs. He picked up the prized wicket of Bailey, who fell for a 24-ball 25. Matthew Wade tried to up the ante and score some runs before becoming Bravo’s fifth victim of the match, falling for 15 on the last ball of the innings.Renegades’ chase didn’t start well as Aaron Finch fell in the first over. But the incoming White and Harris then stitched together a 113-run stand after seeing off the Hurricanes express pace bowlers. They relied upon good cricketing shots, using the pace of the bowlers and a bit of luck to score their runs.Jofra Archer tried to put a leash on scoring and took 2 for 17 from four overs including a double-wicket maiden in the 14th by removing Harris and Tom Cooper to rock the chase a bit.But the seasoned Brad Hodge played a breezy unbeaten knock of 22 from 14 balls to avoid any hiccups accompanying White, who went on with his work with minimal risk to take the Renegades home.Bravo was awarded the man-of-the-match for his fifer. You don’t bowl like that and not end up being the ‘Player of the Match’!Great to have you back @DJBravo47 #BBL07 #GetOnRed pic.twitter.com/CKiC6ai3ez- Melbourne Renegades (@RenegadesBBL) December 21, 2017last_img read more

Bowser Taps Dean to Lead FEMS

first_imgGregory Dean is the former fire chief of Seattle. (Photo/seattle.gov)D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) told residents on March 2 that Gregory M. Dean, the recent fire chief of Seattle, is her choice to lead the District’s fire and emergency medical services (FEMS) department. Despite his interest in being permanent, interim fire chief Eugene Jones was let go.“The safety and well-being of District residents is my top priority and FEMS is at the frontlines of this effort,” Bowser said. “Chief Dean is a proven, collaborative leader who led a department with an international reputation for its fire-based performance. I am certain that he will work with our emergency first responders and the community to move the department forward in exciting ways.”Dean, who worked in Seattle’s FEMS department for 44 years, said, “I look forward to working with Mayor Bowser and FEMS providers to deliver efficient and compassionate fire and emergency medical services to the residents of all eight wards,” Dean said. “We will build on the department’s strengths and bring a data-driven approach that will ensure that we are delivering top notch services 24/7.”In Seattle, Dean led a department of 1,150 employees with a $175 million budget for 10 years. Before becoming chief, he served in lower capacities for well over three decades.Dean has been credited with increasing the overall cardiac arrest survival rate from 26 percent in 2002 to 62 percent in 2014.Dean takes over a department that has been the source of controversy since 2011, when Kenneth Ellerbe took over it. During Ellerbe’s tenure, which ended in June 2014, critics of FEMS charged that employee morale was low, management’s relations with the firefighters union were abysmal and the department’s equipment was either outdated or malfunctioning. On Jan. 25, 2014, Medric Mills, a longtime District resident, died of a heart attack despite members of his family seeking help from FEMS employees at the Rhode Island Avenue Engine House 26. The fire house is across the street from Mills’ residence and his family members were told by FEMS employees that they should call 9-1-1 and didn’t seek to help Mills.Mills’ death generated widespread criticism of Ellerbe’s leadership style. Ellerbe retired in June to work in the private sector.Ellerbe praised Bower’s selection, “Gregory Dean has a long history of accomplishments and he believes in accountability,” Ellerbe told the AFRO. “He is the type of leader that D.C. Fire and EMS needs and should follow.”James Short, a former deputy fire chief, said that he admires Dean’s career and thinks he will bring the department together.“He is the type of chief that will go down to the station and sit down and talk with employees” Short, who worked for FEMS for 33 years, said.D.C. Council member Vincent Orange (D-At-Large) said that he “hasn’t heard anything negative about Dean.”“I do know that Seattle’ fire department and D.C.’s fire department are similar,” Orange said. The D.C. Council must approve Dean’s nomination and D.C. Council member Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5) chairs the Committee on the Judiciary, which will hold hearing on Dean in the near future.“I have not had the chance to speak with him yet but I hear that he has had a long career and he was very well respected in Seattle,” McDuffie said. “I’m looking forward to learning more about him.”Edward Mills III, the acting assistant FEMS chief, will run the department until Dean is confirmed.Short said that Dean should be confirmed and allowed to do what needs to be done to get the department operating in a smooth manner.“Our fire department is in a sad state with firefighters not wearing their uniforms while on duty and people dying in front of fire stations,” he said. “The people leading the department now are young and they have no common sense. Dean should be given a chance to prove himselflast_img read more

Fatal Attack on Interracial Couple in Arizona Heads to Trial

first_imgBy Jacques Billeaud, The Associated PressAn interracial couple was walking near a Phoenix, Ariz. park when authorities say a shirtless neo-Nazi began angrily yelling a racial slur and harassing the Black man in the couple over dating a White woman.Authorities say the men exchanged tense words before Travis Ricci rushed back to a home where other White supremacists were partying, grabbed a shotgun and returned in a sedan driven by an associate. Ricci leaned out the car and fired two buckshot blasts, missing the Black man — the intended target — and killing his girlfriend, investigators said. These undated photos provided by the Arizona Department of Corrections shows Travis Ricci, left, and Aaron Levi Schmidt, right. Ricci, who authorities said was a member of a white supremacist group, is being tried in Phoenix on a murder charge in a woman’s 2009 shooting death; Schmidt, who drove Ricci, has pleaded guilty to charges of murder and assisting a criminal gang. Prosecutors say the woman, who was white, was killed because Ricci was upset that she was dating a black man. (Arizona Department of Corrections via AP)Lawyers are now picking a jury to decide whether Ricci should be convicted of murder and sentenced to death in the 2009 attack, which prosecutors say was a hate crime. Opening statements are tentatively scheduled for June 6.The case has offered several unexpected turns.Ricci, whose defense is expected to include an argument that he’s not the man he used to be, claims his great-grandfather was a member of the French Resistance killed by Nazis during World War II.Authorities are seeking the death penalty, saying 39-year-old Kelly Ann Jaeger’s killing was meant to further the interests of the Vinlanders Social Club, a neo-Nazi group with a reputation for violence that was later targeted in a law enforcement crackdown.Since prosecutors have called the attack a hate crime, they can seek as many as 11 additional years in prison — above the maximum penalty — if Ricci is convicted of other charges, such as attempted murder, drive-by shooting, aggravated assault and assisting a criminal gang.Ricci pleaded not guilty, and his lawyers have raised questions about the ability of Jaeger’s boyfriend, Jeffery Wellmaker, to identify him as the triggerman. They note that nearly two years after the attack, Wellmaker was jailed in an unrelated case and played chess with Ricci behind bars without recognizing him.Aaron Levi Schmidt, who authorities say was driving the car used in the shooting, pleaded guilty to murder in Jaeger’s death. He is already serving 11 years for assisting a criminal gang. It’s unclear if he’s been sentenced on the murder conviction.Lawyers for Ricci and Schmidt, both now 36, have said their clients weren’t members of the Vinlanders.Police reports say Ricci told associates before the attack that he saw black men hitting a white woman, though it’s unclear if that claim was accurate.Rebecca Wilder, a spokeswoman for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, which is prosecuting Ricci, declined to comment on the case. The Phoenix Police Department, which investigated the attack, also declined to comment.Prosecutors said in court records that Wellmaker, who was unarmed, was extremely distraught over the attack and tried to help his girlfriend after she was shot. They say Wellmaker didn’t provoke the attack and tried unsuccessfully to push Jaeger out of the path of the shotgun blast, according to court records.Ricci’s attorneys declined to answer questions about the allegations against their client.“He is a very sensitive person who cares about people in general,” said Jennifer Willmott, one of his lawyers. “He has had a very difficult life.”The attack started brewing after Ricci left his friend’s home angry and drunk, making his way into the neighborhood where he eventually noticed Jaeger and Wellmaker, according to a police report.Prosecutors say Ricci hurled a racial slur at Wellmaker and yelled, “What are you doing with a White girl?”He also told Wellmaker he was going to get “something for him,” prosecutors said.Sometime later, Jaeger and Wellmaker were near a pay phone when the sedan pulled up. Ricci fired two shells, hitting Jaeger in the stomach from about 10 feet (3 meters) away, prosecutors said.In an unrelated crime months after Jaeger’s shooting death, police say Ricci stabbed two men who tried to stop him from attacking his girlfriend. He is serving a 22-year sentence for assault and weapons misconduct convictions.last_img read more

Hydro cyber attack shuts down several metal extrusion plants

first_imgOne of the largest producers of aluminum in the world, Norsk Hydro, was hit by a cyber attack in the company’s IT system on Monday evening affecting major parts of its smelting operations. The attack which escalated overnight and which is still ongoing has caused the company to resort to manual operations at its smelting facilities. The company’s website is currently down and it is posting updates to Facebook. Hydro said that IT systems in most business areas are impacted. According to a statement to BBC, Hydro said that the digital systems at its smelting plants were programmed to ensure machinery worked efficiently. However, these systems had to be turned off. The company is unsure what type of cyber attack it is facing or who is responsible. “We are working to contain and neutralize the attack. It is too early to assess the full impact of the situation. It is too early to assess the impact on customers. We have established a dialogue with all relevant authorities”, the firm updated on their Facebook post. “They are much more reliant today on computerised systems than they were some years ago. But they have the option of reverting back to methods that are not as computerised, so we are able to continue production”, a Hydro spokesperson told BBC. According to Reuters, “The company shut several metal extrusion plants, which transform aluminum ingots into components for car makers, builders, and other industries, while its giant smelters in countries including Norway, Qatar and Brazil were being operated manually.” A Norwegian National Security Authority (NSM) spokesperson said, “We are helping Norsk Hydro with the handling of the situation, and sharing this information with other sectors in Norway and with our international partners.” Hydro is arranging a press meeting on Tuesday, 19 Mar 2019 at 14:00:00 GMT where it will inform everyone about the cyber-attack. We will keep you updated as and when updates to this story is announced. In the meantime, you can check out Norsk Hydro’s Facebook wall for updates.
